Explain to me why people like Trivium.

I've heard all the hooplah, the hype, the blah blah blah... then I heard the music. At the risk of sounding like and old fuddy duddy, I shall say this: Trivium sucks. Really, really bad songwriting. Cliche riffs. Awful vocals. Meandering, directionless guitar playing. Lots of really cheezy sections. Lame album covers. What gives?

It seems to me that some of the worst elements of the 80's are coming back with a vengence. Pointy guitars, rock posturing, the works. What I don't understand is why all these elements which have been almost universally despised for 20 years are all of a sudden cool again. Is it because people really like it, or do they just like it in a post-ironic-emo sort of way?

Although I'm highly opinionated, I rarely find music that I actually hate - perhaps I will have to add Trivium to my extremely short list of most hated bands. In a (possibly) vain attempt to be open-minded, I'd like to hear what you guys see in them. Why do you like them? Are they really the saviours of metal? Is this just a flash in the pan band of the moment, or will they actually stand the test of time? What is that beautiful house? Where does that highway go? Am I right?...Am I wrong? MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

ive only heard one song by them, 'entrance of the conflagration' and i must say it is awesome. especially the guitar works. I never bothered to check their other works though. I prefer avenged sevenfold

I think they are pretty gash to be honest, but its the same with all forms of music, there is no way a piece of music will appeal to everyone!

I bet you can't play as good as Matt Heafy when you were 20.
There's a lot of crap about Trivium nowadays but I'll stick to my opinion. They rock and deserve credit for their work. For their age, they already received approval from both Metallica and Iron Maiden. In fact, the only thing that I hate is the fact that the bassist uses BC Rich Then again, I wouldn't mind having it.
Trans Brown on Flame Top Mockingbird is a beauty!

Man I sound like those guys at Youtube after somebody said ____ SUCKS! Can't help it though I'm a fan.

agreed

i agree with the OP.

i saw them live a few years ago, and found their music and their whole vibe to be pretty senseless. i'm a metalhead to some extent, but these new bands like avenged sevenfold and trivium i just don't understand. throw a bunch of retro-80's fashion and fast guitar solos together, and people seem to swoon for it. yeah, the guitarist can play fast, but i really didn't find any depth to what they were doing at all...it seemed really cliche like the OP says.

for two guitarists that can really shred, and there's some musical depth to their band, i suggest everyone check out All That Remains. Besides that, for extremely talented really heavy stuff, check out Between the Buried and Me. it's grindy so it might not be for some peope, but their songwriting and technical ability is off the charts. especially on The Silent Circus.

rock.

It's all in the name. They got those guys who name heart medicines to come up with it for them. No one can resist it.

Thanks man, I'll definitely check it out.

edit: Any suggestions on where to start? Besides The Silent Circus album. What about All That Remains?

Agree 100%. I really don't get the liking.

For BTBAM I'd start with Alaska. Great album.

Well Benjamin. I see you are a very opinonated metal head.

Honestly Trivium is awesome. Trivium is not bringing back the sh!t parts of teh 80's they are just doing what tehy love doing. Personally I think that thier style is great. their vocalist is defintely in the "Better vocalists" section. The guitarists are great players. The bassist is great and so is their drummer.

You are being a hippocrate to metal and tearing apart what most metal bands are all about: just playing good music and rocking. Their songwriting I'll admit isn't that great. But it never stopped Cannibal Corpse or Napalm Death now did it?

But as stated earlier: Just opinions.

Trivium are a good band for a band this side of the mid 90's. Maybe they are liked so much, bucause all of these scene kids, seem to thin the 'faster' and 'shreddier' the better? (as i've noticed no true metal heads even raise a eyebrow to bands like Trivium)

However, personally if i was to suggest a new metal band to get into I would suggest Devildriver, God Forbid, Scar Symmetry, As I Lay Dying, Chimaira, Still Remains and Soilwork. If you like the guitar 'riffage' and double bass kick drum in music(maybe why you like new metal) then i would suggest black/death/thrash metal over these bands any day, including Slayer, Mayhem, Metallica(pre Black album), Emperor, Megadeth, Iced Earth?, Pantera, Deicide and Burzum.

Wait just a minute here bud, explain how he is being a hypocrite?
You fail to justify this statement.

And for the record, Trivium is cheesy and stupid. I enjoyed them at first but now I'm starting to see how dumb they are. They're like a metal Kansas or something.

Saviors of metal? Hardly. Just a different brand.

I like 'em. Same reason I like Avenged Sevenfold, Shadows Fall, All That Remains, In Flames, and a host of others. No one needs to apologize for not liking them, but no one should be apologizing for enjoying them either.

Trivium is terrible. They have some of the worst vocals i've ever heard. I don't really care how good they are at soloing for their age, there are many guitarists that are 100 times better, and many who aren't as technically proficient but write better songs. Trivium is mallcore fashion metal. Or you could just call it girlfriend metal, metal so watered down and lame that even your girlfriend could like it.

They're just another form of entertainment. A lot of people are really into all that revived 80's cheeseball stuff. The music doesn't have to be revolutionary for people to like it. Different strokes.

At least they can play their instruments. In the late 90's, when nu-metal was popular, I would've given anything to see a band like Trivium knock bands like Limp Bizkit out of the lime light. Looks like I got my wish.

I got my ex girlfriend a Trivium shirt for our first month together.

I dislike that band, really to be honest, they play nothing that I like or anything close to what I like. Everytime I go into "Hot Topic" thats all I hear. Anyways I would rather listen to BTBAM, The Red Chord, Into The Moat, Behold... The Arctopus.

I liked Ascendancy, but the new stuff doesn't do it for me.
