Wow, I saw him at the Grammys pre-telecast awards ceremony (where most of the awards are given, and it's open seating, unlike the Staples Center spectacle later). I happened to be sitting two rows behind him. When he was announced as winner of the Best Traditional Blues Album and he and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith got up to go to the stage, I nudged my buddy and said, "Man, that was Pinetop Perkins sitting in front of us! Pinetop Perkins!" He didn't look 97. Old, yes, but not almost a century.

Interestingly, he and Dr. John made similar instrumental progressions from guitar to piano.

RIP, Pinetop. Thanks for your music.

Got to open for Pinetop, a few years bask.
