Ya, Axl's voice is crap now. Has been for a long time. Same with Vince Neil, watch a recent Motley show, he barely even sings full words.

First, I listen mainly rock and blues, so that does have a huge impact on my view of the subject.

That said, I'd say it'd be easier to list the bands with really good singers in the popular genres.

For me, rock/blues is not about the vocals (or any other single slice) being perfect or good, it's about the whole package. Always.

Mick Jagger can't sing, and he's said so himself on many occasions, the same goes for Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Tom Petty, Lemmy, Gene Simmons etc. The list is really endless.

Take the Travelling Wilburys for example, Roy Orbison was magnitudes better (sometimes painfully so) than the rest of the guys every single time he opened his mouth. Did that slow them down, no. Did they leave all the singing to Roy, no.

The hair (metal) pop bands singers from the 80's and 90's are a sad chapter on their own .

Regards
Sam

I feel this thread is (or should be) about bands with genuinely bad singers, not bands with singers whose voice you don't like, e.g. you may hate James LaBrie's voice, but you'd have to be insane to say that he's a bad singer.

When it comes to poor singers, the only band which had an undoubtedly bad singer (singing-wise) would be Joy Division. Personally I'm a massive fan of the band and Ian's delivery was exactly what the songs needed sometimes, but as a singer in the usual, technical sense of the word, he was fairly poor. He fared better in songs where he kept within his usual low register than in songs where he tried to go up higher.

^add to that the painfully bad vocals of New Order's Bernard Sumner....the drugs didn't help.

That said, it fits the music.

RHCP :/

Maybe it's just me, but Keidis (sp) just doesn't seem to be able to sing in key. The real tragedy is that is he fronting one of the most talented lineups otherwise.

Motorhead. I can usually sort out the words, at least, on Bob Dylan's songs.

Yup +1, especially for New Order's version of Ceremony.

And I totally agree on the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anthony Kiedis is out of his depth in that band.

Geddy's voice might not be the most pleasing, but at least he can sing in key. Kiedis, on the other hand...
