I bring this up because the other day I realized that I really just can't stand Jaco's tone. I've tried many a time to get into his stuff, and I honestly think it's great, but there's something that always bugged me about him. I'm coming to realize that tone is a more important factor in deciding what I like basswise than I had once thought.
It's trebly. It's nasally. It's vibrato-ey. It gets under my skin!
For all you flamers out there, I am NOT dissing Jaco on the whole. I have as much respect as the next guy for what he's done for bass and for music. I know he didn't have just one tone, but there is that "Jaco sound" we all know, the one that made him famous, and that's what I'm talking about.
This thread is meant to discuss players whose tone of choice is a dealbreaker for you. Bonus points if you really like what they're doing otherwise.
Whose tone really annoys YOU?

Yeah, I'm with you on the really trebly slap sound. Granted, I do like some fat, mellow slap that you'll hear on some older funk and soul and whatnot. But all this clangy tweeter-fueled business can get a bit much for me.

EDIT: That is, he had like 12 different (VERY different) tones over his career. His Jazz Bass with tapewounds sounded nothing like his Warwick with gold-plated rounds..

| | | | Jack Bruce: Although one of my all time favorite players, his tone, back in the day, was atrocious as was Felix Pappllardi's tone. Gibson with a huge mid bump. BUT, they both made it work. |

It is a true testament to a musician when they can achieve some level of respect among the majority of musicians for their playing and composition skills using one god-awful sounding instrument.
With McCartney, it hardly seemed to matter what he was playing, Hofner, Ric, Jazz, he made them all sound equally bad with that dull lifeless thud tone of his.
That being said, he has had an incredibly important influence on me as a bassist, musician, composer, and performer. Sir Paul. Not his tone.

marcus miller would probs sound better if he used a passive bass
fleas live sound isnt that great
i think tho a really bad tone is pete wentz, mikey way and the bass player from paramore
ok yeah i hate all those bands but one main reason is cos the bass on those songs sound the same
its all to acceptable |
