Question Fav 5 Album covers

Sign in to disble this ad
I went through some of my collections (books, mags, music, etc.) the other night and started checking out some great old LP covers from my neurotic vinyl stash.

Album covers were a true ART form back in the 60s, (especially) 70s, and 80s. Those 12in x 12in images lent so much to the imagination of what the music might bring. Todays CD covers cannot convey that much due to that dinky size.

So what are your top 5 Favorite Album Covers (or CD covers).

Here's mine in no particular order:
1. Rush - Caress of Steel. Underrated album, AMAZING image.
2. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam - That paranoid, schizo image overhead is perfectly balanced by the guys hole in his shoe. Great cover, GREATER album.
3. Yes - Yesterdays - I actually met the artist, the GREAT Roger Dean, who explained to me that that cover was inspired by his adolescence. See the pic, you'll understand. It's a guy thing.
3. Iron Maiden - Just about ALL of them, but Powerslave has so much hidden stuff in it. You can sit there for hours and find things you missed at first.
4. Jethro Tull - Broadsword & the Beast. That sinister "elf" staring at you is great not to mention the angle of the heads on the frame of the image.
5. Styx - The Grand Illusion - By the Amazing Stanley Mouse & Alton Kelley. Man, those guys defined an era (eg, Grateful Dead, Steve Miller, Journey). So clean, just like the good stuff back in the day, heh .

So what are some others?? 5 of your favs.

As you say, '...see the cover(s), it's a guy thing'.

Also-
Miles' Bitches Brew
Beatles' Revolver or Sgt. Pepper's
Tull's Thick As A Brick (Note the 'beaver shot')
Alice Cooper's School's Out or Pretties For You
Blind Faith's debut album
Etc...

If you're a Roger Dean fan, there's some interesting hidden images on the front cover of Uriah Heep's Demons & Wizards.

Love the Sabbath!!! The back cover is cool too - it's kinda the "before" all hell breaks loose.

stealing wal-mart's bandwidth....

too many others.......

12" vinyl was where it was at when it comes to album artwork. Little CD covers just don't cut it.

Beatles -- White Album
Spinal Tap -- Smell the Glove
Steely Dan -- Aja
Eric Dolphy -- Out to Lunch
Astor Piazzolla -- Tango: Zero Hour

And damned near all of the ECM covers from the 1970's. Call me a minimalist.

Can't post a pic, but I used to have the original LP Lovedrive, from the Scorpions, before it was banned in the US. Quite provocative for a young teen in the early eighties.
