Who else on TalkBass, besides me, has developed a real fondness and appreciation for ambient/electronic music? Who else sees it as potentially the future of popular music (especially when fused with more traditional forms, such as rock, pop & jazz)?
Who are some of your favorite artists? Here are mine: - The Orb
- Future Sound of London
- Aphex Twin
- Fila Brazilia
- David Sylvian (with & without Fripp; with & without Eno)

There's some Cocteau Twins recordings that are simply amazing.
As long as we're going old school, check out
Tonto's Expanding Head Band.
and of course- Tangerine Dream!
gotta add Wendy Carlos to the list.
Vangelis can be cheesy, as can Kitaro, but quite ambient/ electronic none the less.
Pole
Ghostly International (a current label) has great new artists like Com Truise, Shigeto, and Tokimonsta.

| | | | There is much diversity in the labels of ambient and electronic. I love all of it and will list some that I can think of, though they may not all fall into both categories.
Terry Riley
Front Line Assembly
Android Lust
Tiesto
deadmau5
FC Kahuna
Paul McCartney (he has experimented with this on his album McCartney II and his Fireman albums)
Billy Idol (check out his album Cyberpunk)
John Cage
Lemon Jelly

I guess the reason why most of my favorites are more old school is because 1) since they've had more time to move toward the mainstream, I'm more familiar with them, and 2) I'm really not into the newer house and hip-hop oriented forms...
I definitely like the way that ambient/electronic influences have increasingly permeated modern and progressive rock...such as with Porcupine Tree, for example...

I saw them live in Philadelphia last year at the Star's End "Gatherings" concert series on the Penn U. campus. They put out a Syd Barret tribute album a few years ago that was a departure from ambient/electronica and was basically straight up 60s space rock. Really cool group.

It's kind of cheesy, but I also enjoy Jean Michel Jarre's "Oxygen". That's gotta be ambient, yeah?
I'm looking forward to checking out this threads recommended music. Thanks MM. Sub'd |

MM | Wow, thanks!
My last label was the now defunct E:MIT records: index)
I'm a J. Dilla fan, along with Mad Lib and Oh No! so I like that side of the crossover, with Flying lotus as an example.
Not so much the techno, but gimme the d'nb any day.
The gatherings in Philly is definitely a great thing, I remember performing in a massive church for that.
Anyone in the Philly area should check it out for amazing live electronic performance in a crazy cool space.
Gotta add Orbital for the old and
Amon Tobin to the list.
Stockhausen for old school too, of course!
And i'll add my old band mate Gel Sol to the list, there's some nice tracks on here: http://gel-sol.blogspot.com/
