Favorite Band You Are Embarassed To Admit You Like

Sign in to disble this ad
I was talking with a drummer friend earlier today and we were discussing a lot of different bands. It got me thinking. Which band or bands are you emabarrased to admit you like or wouldn't want your friends to know you like? If possible, provide an explanation such as, great bass lines, songwriting, great hooks, etc.

Tori Amos. I've been to about 5 concerts, and I was probably the only straight guy at any of those concerts, minus the ones who got dragged there by their girlfriends. Always liked her voice, and she's a ridiculously talented musician. At one of the shows too, i couldn't stop watching the bass player, who was kind of standing in the shadows...playing some really great lines throughout the show.

I thought we've had a few of these threads of late.

While I'm not embarrassed to like a band (or I wouldn't like it in the first place), if a friend of mine came to know that I like Ace Of Base and Zippora, it could be embarrassing for me.

Ani DiFranco. See the Tori Amos comment above. A few years ago I was in a band with three lesbians and when I told them I liked Ani they thought it was some sort of lame attempt at a dig at them.

my friends know I have diverse tastes, so I am never ashamed to admit who I like...

one that comes to mind, however...

the Go Go's......catchy grooves. not bad bass either.

While I'm not ashamed to admit it, I do get weird looks when I say I genuinely like Duran Duran.

It would be the band "no doubt" cool bass lines, started out on the song it's my life. so it will always have a certain soft spot with me.

ABBA
Wang Chung ("Live and Die in LA"...my favorite)
Culture Club (gotta dig Mikey Craig)
George Michael (perve but the guy can sing)
Bette Midler (but not the syrupy stuff)
The Carpenters (I miss Karen)

I'll think of more in time.

The original Wiggles. Good songwriting - of course it helps if you are 3 years-old.

Duran Duran is not one of my favorite bands, but there is some great bass in their songs. I worked for a radio station in 1995 and they hired Duran Duran to play a concert in the park as a promotion. I have to admit they were very good live. "Rio" has some funky bass.

I like Green Day too and don't think there is any reason to be embarrassed. Even though most Green Day songs are pretty simple punk songs, Mike Dirnt is a very good bassist for this genre of music. He does some unique and cool bass lines in songs like "Longview", excellent speed pick-playing in songs like "The Panic Song", and overall solid bottom-end bass lines. I saw them live twice on the American Idiot tour and they are an excellent live band.
