I love to watch drummer do their thing and when watching bands live, my attention usually gravitates to them. I think it's amazing that they can coordinate their bodies so well. One part of their bodies is doing beats and the other part is doing off beats. Some of the drummers I know look almost like praying mantises when they play because they body's relax so much their their knees almost go up to their shoulders when using the kick or the hi-hat. They're so fluid and look like they're having such a great time.

Second favorite people to watch are the singers. I love when they actually get into it. You can tell by their faces that they're lost in the song. If it's faster music, I think it's cool that they just kinda dance or fling themselves along with it.

If the singers were dull or the drummers mechanical, my enjoyment for the music would go down ten fold, even with a great guitarist and bassist.

Who do you guys focus on? Who makes or breaks music for you when they're off.

Example of good song being killed.
I really like Nothing Else Matters from Metallica.
I video clip I saw of Metallica doing it at some concert really dissapointed me because James was so off. I had a hard time focusing on how well the rest of the band was doing because I was cringing at his singing.

I usually watch bass players, almost studying their finger movements...but a lot time I also gravitate towards drummers too. Sometimes I'm amazed to hear all those different sounds coming from 4 limbs...

Speaking of what people like to listen to and to toot my own horn, there are 2 songs we play in our band (Californication by RHCP and Starlight by Muse) where more often than not, the rythm guitarist will just keep strumming the same chords as everyone else progresses through and at the end of the song we ask what happened and he replies "Oh man, the bass line just hypnotises me when he nails it like that".

I don't think I'm good enough to warrant that kind of comment, and I am just covering someone else's basslines, but it's a good feeling when I hear him say it

Of course I like to watch and listen bass players, but aside from that, I also like to focus my attention on drummers. Actually, Neil Peart makes me want to be a drummer!

+1, we performed together in the early 70's.

Another is my talented wife, Lady Bo, she's got the complete package, guitar player, vocals, steps, looks. In fact I've been told by many drummers over the years that they enjoy playing behind her. If they can't get the groove behind her they never will.

One of my favorites is bass player Bill Sharpe, shown here with Dave Koz. The guitarist is Tony Maiden, of Rufus and Chaka Kahn. Brian Simpson on keys (he has a new solo album out), and Stevo Theard on drums. Here's a Youtube clip. Watch the whole thing.
