Favorite Zappa Lineup?

Sign in to disble this ad
This seemed like the appropriate forum to place this...so, lets talk about it, eh?

I, myself am hard pressed to choose a favorite. Depends on what kind of mood I'm in, really...But it I had to choose, then I'd say:

Ed Mann
Tommy Mars
Scott Thunes
Chad Whackerman
Steve Vai
Bobby Martin

Even though I'm watching Baby Snakes right now...with the human trombone...

Yeah, that's a great one!

Well, they're all great! lol...

I've just got a thing for the Whackerman/Thunes combination.

That's an extremely hard question to answer for me. It's much easier to say that my least favorite Zappa lineup is the one fronted by Flo & Eddie.

Frank zappa
Captain beefheart
George duke
Napoleon murphy brock
Bruce fowler
Tom fowler
Denny walley
Terry bozzio

that's my favorite. I was a big fan of chad whackerman too, but bozzio brought a ton of energy to the music and live recordings.

Yep, the Bongo Fury Line Up. I was fortunate enough to see a show from that tour. At the show I saw Beefheart did a great rendition of the Orange Claw Hammer that unfortunately didn't make the record.

I'm particularly fond of the recordings with Flo & Eddie. Their vocals meshed successfully with Zappas music.

I'm still fond of the Baby Snakes setup: Zappa, Terry Bozzio, Patrick O'Hearn, Tommy Mars and Adrian Belew. Maybe it has to do with the movie itself, too.

ah...Baby Snakes...That was probably one of the last times he had that many people on stage, because the guy pushed him off, and he got really messed up, remember?

From Wikipedia
Quote:
After a week's break, The Mothers played at the Rainbow Theatre, London, with rented gear. During the encore, an audience member pushed Zappa off the stage and into the concrete-floored orchestra pit. The band thought Zappa had been killed—he had suffered serious fractures, head trauma and injuries to his back, leg, and neck, as well as a crushed larynx, which ultimately caused his voice to drop a third after healing.[105] This left him wheelchair bound, forcing him off the road for over half a year. Upon his return to the stage in September 1972, he was still wearing a leg brace, had a noticeable limp and could not stand for very long while on stage. Zappa noted that one leg healed "shorter than the other" (a reference later found in the lyrics of songs "Zomby Woof" and "Dancin' Fool"), resulting in chronic back pain.

The accident happened 1971 at the Rainbow Theathre, London. The Baby Snakes setup happened 1977.

The reason for the man pushing Zappa offstage was supposedly that he believed Zappa was flirting with his girlfriend below stage. Or something similar.

There was never a bad lineup IMHO, but I really find I liked the last '88 tour best. With the whole horn section I think Frank said it was close to his dream configuration, too bad other crap turned it sour.

Too hard to decide.

I lost my bookmark of Bozzio's thing on "The Drum Channel". A few months ago, I found a way [legally] to link to several interviews where Terry reminisces with many a Zappa Player. Great stuff.

Only the good die young.

The '88 lineup is terrific! TBBYNHIYL is one of my all-time favorite Zappa albums. My only (sort of) gripe is that, with such "acoustic" formation, a fingerstyle bass player would have been even more appropriate. IMO, Scott Thunes' tone perfectly fitted the more synth-driven Zappa band from '84, with Alan Zavod on keyboards.
