Favourite Blues Bands?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been learning walking bass lines and jamming a little on 12 bar blues etc..... I've never really listened to any blues recordings before but would like to now.

I'm at a bit of a loss to know where to start or who to listen to so if you have any favourite blues bands old or new, please list them here.

Thanks

My absolute favorites (regardless of whether there's a bass in the recording or not):

Robert Johnson
Muddy Waters (check out the Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live 2 disc set that Sony re-released not long ago. It's excellent work from the whole band)
John Lee Hooker (especially the chess recordings)
T Bone Walker
Tab Benoit
Susan Tedeschi's band (Check out "It Hurts So Bad" Great fuzzy bass tone on that song)
Jimi Hendrix put out a blues album, and IIRC, Muddy Waters or John Lee Hooker did the liner notes talking about how Jimi was the best blues guitarist to come along in decades. Noel Redding does some amazing work on that album.

God, there's tons.

Do yourself a favor. Every Friday night from 9PM to 1AM, WDVX plays nothing but solid blues. The first hour is acoustic, primitive style blues, and the last three hours are more modern electric blues, normally. The guy that runs the show, Johnny Mack, plays nothing but really, really good songs.

Pah!

Old blues are where it all came from. Most of the traditional blues bass people hear is derived directly from the right thumbs of people like Bob Johnson and early, early Muddy Waters. I think that, not only are they really good, but old blues tunes are important in a historical and musical sense.

Im a fan of roben ford and got to see him front row so that was cool.

Also, JPJ plays a lot of blues on the first two albums.

Almost forgot, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.

who is roben ford

Oh
Robben Ford, yeah, awesome!

I just picked up the 'Vintage Fleetwood Mac"
the 1968 recording at' The Boston Tea Party...
Landsdowne Street next to Fenway Park in the old church ....

No, forget Stevie Nicks ...

This is the 60's
This was the 3 lead guitar player band
with:

Peter Green;
Jeremy Spencer;
and Danny Kirwan.

Mick Fleetwood does an awesome job on
'Rattlesnake Shake'. McVie is who was touted to be,
a John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers veteran. Great bottom
and good remix on CD.

Play this one at 11!

Can't find any over the top in the blues, you ain't listening!

Alot of good blues have been mentioned, so I won't repeat them.

Willie Kent. Pay close attention to the timing. His lines are repetitious (he is also the singer) but fit the songs and are not overplayed.

Also, I love the bass lines on Omar and the Howlers last album.

There are sooooo many.....

Try the Nighthawks, Scott Henserson from Tribal Tech (has 2 or 3 blues albums - Dog Party is my personal favorite) The Thunderbirds - their old stuff, Little Charlie and the Nightcats and don't forget Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray.

I can't even begin to list names, but the Chicago blues festival was absolutley increadable. The Sidewinders put on a really high energy show that was awesome.

When I think of Blues, SRV is the first name I think of.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of BB King. Great, great guitarist. I don't have any mp3's or CDs with Freddy or Albert King, but I've heard both of them on the radio and they're madly talented. Never really been a huge SRV fan, personally. Eric Clapton is definitely worth checking out, and Aretha Franklin is just plain incredible.
