Here's a pic of my latest piano bass. A gold sparkle in great condition has always eluded me until now. I had one that was not all original, but this baby is in fine shape.
and of course in it's proper environment... |

I think he was the most ambitious regarding starting it all up. I have alot of respect for him as it was his organ and piano bass sound that set them apart for me. The first song I heard was when I was in high school...late 80s. His approach was so different, it hooked me in! |

| | | Hmmmm...big Doors' fan since I was in the 6th grade (1970).
Just watched the the When You're Strange DVD. I'm in the camp that it was the combination of all 4 guys: Classically-trained keyboardist, Flamenco guitarist, Jazz drummer, a poet...+ weed & lava lamps.
The Doors' sound LIVE was a different animal than their records (discounting their great debut). The recordings with a bassist were a more "polished"...LIVE, as a 4-tet, they were more raw. That Fender piano bass was a huge ingredient of their live sound.

While Morrison hogs the headlines, he was lucky to have them as his musicians because they "sold" his ideas musically. Not an easy band to cover, either.

They were all greats, but he was a big part of the magic.
And I'm old enough to have heard them when they first broke "on through to the other side."

It had been awhile since I last watched it; wow, worse than I remembered.
