What about getting a thumbrest?

What about playing with a pick?

Sorry, panda, for the jibe, but seriously a ramp is a different beast than a thumbrest, with a different purpose.
You *can* rest your thumb on a ramp, but the main purpose is to provide a consistent "stop" for your fingers when you pluck, hopefully yielding a lighter touch (you just can not dig in) and greater plucking consistency (and therefore speed and accuracy - that's the theory, and I find that it works for me).
To the OP - I found that I got used to a ramp quickly, and am in the process of adding ramps to my other main basses.
A ramp *can* be a hassle if you slap, but you can mitigate that by not having the ramp come all the way to the fretboard.
