Fingers Locking up

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a search to find a topic like this and couldn't find one, that said:

A common problem i'm having when i'm performing is that my plucking fingers are locking up and aren't playing at the speed i want them to, and the more i think about it, the worse the condition gets. This happens about midway through each show and eventually goes away. is there any way to avoid this? do i need to do finger exercices or is this a condition? they dont completely lock, i just stop playing at the right speed. thanks

Yes there is. Dont think about it. Concentrate on your fretting hand and dont think about your plucking hand at all. You'll pull it off.

Try a lighter touch. It's easier to play fast if you don't dig in too much.

+1 to the relax suggestions. Might want to try stretching your hands out for a couple of minutes before playing also.

Relaxation is KEY. I don't try to focus on anything at all. Just playing to hear the rythm singing through on my bass. Don't try to prove a point, just let it flow and keep your mind on the music as a whole. Got a exercise for you. Download the song Pawnshop by Sublime, as well as get the tab. Practice this as much as possible, it is an extremely easy song but it is very repetitive, plus just the frets you gott hit especially the hammer-on gets really rough on the hands if you don't use proper technique. If you can make it through this song without your fingers hurting, you can pretty much go through anything. You really just gotta start playing it a while to see what I am talking about, IMO any song can be played comfortably, you just gotta work with it and find the right positions and techniques.

Are you talking about plucking fingers cramping up? Similar to a leg muscle spasm when running. Drink more water. You might want to warm up before a show and ease up a bit while playing.

Doesnt really matter if you play hard anyway, little by little your fingers will relax on their own as you keep playing. Playing hard in the beginners' days will build your fingers' strength too, so its not all that bad.

Yup. Sounds like its a combo of nerves, fatigue and technique. I used to cramp up like that about 2 hours into a set and my hands were a mess...and I don't even get 'performance anxiety'.

I spent some time woodshedding my technique to play lighter and with more precision. I also started practicing much more to build my stamina.

Remember to breathe. When I first started playing I would tense up and tend to hold my breath during hard passages. Relax and breathe.
