First gig at 40

Nope, that's true, I never gigged.

The 40-year old gig virgin? That's me.

I was in several bands in my teens and 20s, always lots of drama, fights, arguments, until I was in that female fronted band for which we worked a lot, until the singer slept with the key guy, then the drummer, and then you know that band was done after that. I should have hit open mikes and open jam sessions, I know, but I was a bit unaware of the music scene.

I then went to college, then to the military, then for some reason I started a rugby career, emigrated to the US, started a career in software, as well as a family.

But bass was always in the back of my mind. So I started playing again in January of this year and in January of next year I have my first gig set up with that band whose bassist flaked out at the last minute.

It's of course exciting but I'm a bit anxious about it. I am a bit old for stage fright, but I have a bit of that too.

Fun, eh?

It doesn't matter how old you are. You can have your first gig at any age. You'll do good. It'll feel so good up there that you'll forget about the stage fright and just have fun. Practice your set list till you have it totally down and don't have to worry about it.

FWIW although I had a steady 2 month gig (5 days a week) as a 19 y.o. guitarist and singer, I didn't have my first bass gig till I was 66.
So don't fret, everything will be ok, and you'll love it.

And congratulations!

way to go! Hey I started playing bass 2 years ago, and did my first sit ins with a band at 37-almost 38! I just turned 39 last week. So you aren't the only "late bloomer"! Best of luck to you!

Congrats !! It's never too late to start. Nice to know I'm in good company here, as I had my first gig when in my 40's
