Hi everybody.
I did a search before posting this and couldn't find anything. Just had a conversation on this subject with some friends and thought it would be cool to know what fellow TalkBassers have to say about it. The idea is to talk about artists with a considerable catalog, so please no one-hit wonders. Here are the ones I can recall right now for me, including some bands of which I'm not a huge fan but heard and like most of their hits:
- Rush: "The Analog Kid"
- Kiss: "I Was Made For Loving You"
- AC/DC: "Hells Bells"
- Iron Maiden: "Wrathchild"
- Frank Zappa: "Tush Tush Tush (A Token Of My Extreme)"
- (Peter Gabriel's) Genesis: "Watcher Of The Skies"
- Beatles: "A Hard Day's Night"
- Led Zeppelin: "I'm Gonna Crawl"
- The Police: "Every Breath You Take"
- Deep Purple: "Burn" (although I heard the famous "Smoke On The Water" intro on TV, but didn't know who played that)
- Van Halen: "Runnin' With The Devil"
- Black Sabbath: "Never Say Die"
- Aerosmith: "No Surprize"
- Eagles: "Heartache Tonight"
- Bee Gees: "Stayin' Alive"
- Cheap Trick: "Dream Police"
- Ted Nugent: "Wango Tango"
- Judas Priest: "Rapid Fire"
- Stevie Ray Vaughan: "Say What!"
- Boston: "More Than A Feeling"
- Chic: "Le Freak" (maybe not that big catalog, but not one-hit wonders either. Same for Boston)
- Queen: "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
- Rod Stewart: "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?"
- Toto: "Child's Anthem"
- Jethro Tull: "By Kind Permission Of"
- Emerson, Lake & Palmer: "Knife-Edge"
- Pink Floyd: "Another Brick In The Wall Part II" (Also heard "Time" and "Money" intros on TV before but didn't know anything about the performers) |

Say how many albums they've released for example. The only band that I know has a "considerable catalouge" like that I like is Metallica, I first heard One.

Well, I don't know... like at least six well known albums, maybe? (Again, Chic and Boston may not fit that) I wasn't thinking of an specific number. Just artists whose production wasn't limited just to one or two albums. I was thinking of The Knack ("My Sharona") when creating my list, but I discarded it because nothing relevant was heard from them after that, as far as I know. |

Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
My dad was a jazz trumpeteer back in the days of Glenn Miller, & such... (he used to say he played for Glenn Miller, but I'm pretty sure its a fish story) ANYWAY, he gave up music to get a corporate job, & rejected music. Well, as a gift to my dad, my brother brought him an original copy of Led Zeppelin II, in hopes of reviving his interest in music. Dad listened to it once, & called it junk... BUT, when I was in 5th grade, I found it & gave it a spin. The rest is history. |

Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart (although, as I started delving deeper into the Yes catalog, I instantly recognized the Minimoog line from "The Revealing Science of God" from the Tales From Topographic Oceans album, so I'm sure I had heard part of that when I was a little kid or something.)
Genesis - Abacab or No Reply At All, I can't remember which.
Kraftwerk - Autobahn (this was indeed something I had heard first as a little kid (without knowing what it was) but didn't hear it again until I was in my late teens.)
Marillion - Freaks
The Police - Roxanne |

It was right around the time I started to watch TV and MTV (back when it still had decent music programs on) Sonic Youth Teenage Riot Neutral Milk Hotel Heard "Holland 1945" after I got in a friends car. "You've never heard of this band? Listen to this..." My Bloody Valentine Heard "Sometimes" in Lost In Translation. Didn't look to see who it was, then I saw a video for "only shallow" on vh1 classic and immedietly got "Loveless"

I read an article in a music magazine about him and along with it was a croatian translation of the lyrics. I had a feeling I might like his music, but, since I live in a small town and those were still days before internet, I couldn't find any of his records to listen to. Finaly when I first visited my brother after he went to live in Berlin, I went to a big CD shop and picked up a lot of records to listen to which I couldn't get my hands on back home. Along with some Zappa, David Byrne, Tim Buckley and others came Drake's Pink moon. I found the only title I new anything about, since I read the lyrics, and when it started to play I felt like the heaven's gates are openinig, 'cause I just found the music, the sound, the lyrics, everything I was ever looking for in the music through that one song. There's so much great music in the world, I like so many different artists that have been important to me all my life, but that one guy and that one particular song will always remain my favorite.
