That list is only 1/5th correct. Paula Abdul can't sing at all.

When American Idol first came on I was wondering why they had her as a judge. She stinks. They probably had put in some serious overtime at the studio to get her vocals to sound half decent.

My thoughts exactly. I can see Bowie, he was a bit over stylized, I thougth Steve Mariott was a great vocalist, but the screech could get old fast...best taken in small doses, Whitney, yup, she has a great voice, but it did seem she was showing off on every tune. Abdul, she should have just kept her mouth shut.

One I thought knd of ruined "pop" vocals and I am suprised she didn't make the list is Cher. Great vocalist, but when she wanted to be rock, she wasn't and her "pop" was more show tunes. Loved her voice, and loved her shows, but again, all style and no substience.

The article just tells me how easily nonentities can spread their opinion on the internet.

Well, I do question the singing ability of some of the ones he brought up, but those he mentioned laughed all the way to the bank and attained fame, if only for a season. What about the author of the piece?

I really don't think we can hate on Bowie. Houston and Abdul? Most definitely. What about the early 90's Seattle throat virus that everyone was catching?

If you guys actually read the article, its not saying that these guys were the worst singers in pop music, its that they "ruined" it somehow. I don't know if I buy that, but he seems to praise every one of the individual artists (except Abdul), then go on to explain that people copping their style lead to "ruined" pop music.

Where the *$%& are the Jonas Brothers or Milli Vanilli or Vanilla Ice?????? The guy who wrote this article has no idea what he's talking about.

If David Bowie did ruin pop music, he did it on purpose and for a good reason.

That article has a failed premise. For instance, it states that Jim Morrison could handle his singing style, but others who copied it could not.

So even though a singer CAN pull off a particular style, they ruin music because OTHERS try to do the same and can't? (This seems to be a basic premise of the article.)

Bull****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OTOH, I think one of the main offenses to music in the last 20 years is the over-singing and trills that female singers seem obligated to throw into their music. I don't like it when Whitney Houston does it (although she's far from the worst offender), I think it stinks when Mariah Carey does it, and it's even worse (verbiage suitable for this forum fails me) when attempted by the thousands of other female singers who punish us with unending trills and flourishes.

IMO, most of the time all those trills do is cover a lack of ability to sing, while the producer uses pitch adjustment and adds layers of background singers to obscure the fact that the singer stinks.

Women, take a lesson from Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and hundreds of other female singers - LEARN how to sing, and then do so, straight up. Forget the trills.

When I just looked at the names I was a bit unsettled, but then I read the article. The guy has a point. Their quirks that made them unique became abused by those that followed. This is especially true with the whole Whitney over embellished, Wonka-vator singing thing. I can't remember the last time I was at a sporting event where the person singing the national anthem didn't feel the need to make the word "free" a 14 syllable word. While I wouldn't say these 5 singers ruined pop music, you can trace some of the stuff we complain about back to them.
