Abdul, she should have just kept her mouth shut.
One I thought knd of ruined "pop" vocals and I am suprised she didn't make the list is Cher. Great vocalist, but when she wanted to be rock, she wasn't and her "pop" was more show tunes. Loved her voice, and loved her shows, but again, all style and no substience.

I don't know if I buy that, but he seems to praise every one of the individual artists (except Abdul), then go on to explain that people copping their style lead to "ruined" pop music.

If David Bowie did ruin pop music, he did it on purpose and for a good reason.

So even though a singer CAN pull off a particular style, they ruin music because OTHERS try to do the same and can't? (This seems to be a basic premise of the article.)
Bull****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OTOH, I think one of the main offenses to music in the last 20 years is the over-singing and trills that female singers seem obligated to throw into their music. I don't like it when Whitney Houston does it (although she's far from the worst offender), I think it stinks when Mariah Carey does it, and it's even worse (verbiage suitable for this forum fails me) when attempted by the thousands of other female singers who punish us with unending trills and flourishes.
IMO, most of the time all those trills do is cover a lack of ability to sing, while the producer uses pitch adjustment and adds layers of background singers to obscure the fact that the singer stinks.
Women, take a lesson from Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and hundreds of other female singers - LEARN how to sing, and then do so, straight up. Forget the trills.

Their quirks that made them unique became abused by those that followed. This is especially true with the whole Whitney over embellished, Wonka-vator singing thing. I can't remember the last time I was at a sporting event where the person singing the national anthem didn't feel the need to make the word "free" a 14 syllable word. While I wouldn't say these 5 singers ruined pop music, you can trace some of the stuff we complain about back to them.
