Flea using a fretless?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I was trying to watch the RHCP video yesterday (emphasis on trying, barely made it through) and I noticed Flea is actually playing a fretless bass, well, he's slapping a fretless like a fretted. Thought it'd be cool to show it.

Here's the video, eh..enjoy..

Yeah, I noticed that a while ago... I figure it's just the bass he had that the director thought would suit the video image/colour scheme best.

He played fretless on The Mars Volta cd that he recorded on, De-Loused in the Comatorium, as well. Not that hes playing fretless in this song, just pretending to on the vid. Looks like the jaco relic. Interesting.

He said he had put intrest into vintage instruments. Maybe he got ahold of the REAL bass of doom?

I'm pretty sure he used a bit more fretless on BTW. I'd have to listen to the cd again.

Looks like a CS Jaco Sig relic to me.

Certainly a beautiful bass, and Flea has played them before.

Theres some parts of Take the veil as well.

steve21, the lines are probably hard to see because they are pretty dark.

I think that's actually Justin Meldel-Johnson on upright.

It's JMJ on Televators, and I don't think Flea played fretless on TMV's album, I think it was just a Jazz bass with low action.

And why does Flea insist on wearing that jumpsuit... it's so... gah.

Pretty cool video, sometimes less is more! "Tell me Baby" is probably my favourite song from the new album. It's also pretty cool how all the people with instruments they had in the video obviously knew how to play them.

The song on the album was definitely recorded with a fretted, though.

from mixonline.com (engineer for the mars volta's deloused...):

"Can you give me the details on recording Flea for this album?

For the bass, we had Flea play a beautiful '64 Fender Precision P bass through an SVT bass head and 8×10 cabinet. I used a Neumann FET 47 on the cabinet and a Demeter DI. I compressed with LA-2As on both channels. It was a slightly different sound for Flea, but he is such a talented musician that he fit in perfectly. The bass needed to be full and present, because, essentially, the bass was the foundation of every track."

Due to a shiny epoxy coating... it's hard to see the fretlines in certain angles of light...

But in other angles of light, they're bright as day...

YouTube has TONS of Jaco videos, check them out.
