Flight Case help

Sign in to disble this ad
I appears that I have a gig in Vancouver, so I'm in need of a flight case. Can anyone make any recommendations? I'm travelling with my 73 P-bass so I'm not going to cheap out on this. I am looking for advice based on someone's use of the product. Thanks in advance. Does anyone have advice on airlines that are a little more friendly with gear than others?

I had an Anvil ATA case made to fit my Spector (it also fits my Warwick Streamer St.II) and its a tank with a handle.

Check out the SKB "bass safe" you just put your gig bag in it and roll ( I believe it may be
ATA rated)

+1 for an Anvil ATA Series case. Give it to a troup of gorillas and they still won't be able to damage your bass. I've got one for my Modulus and it's frightening how indestructible it is. And how heavy it is.

-1 for an SKB Bass Safe. Do Not Entrust Your Instrument To One Of These! Google it, or do a search here in TB; way too many problems for this to be a viable solution for airline travel.

Although I do think the Bass Safe is a viable solution for surface travel on low budget tours, where you're humping most of your own gear -- or you know all the people who are going to handle your gear -- and you're traveling in vans or cars, not tractor-trailers. Basically if the thing is going to be loaded by someone who doesn't know or care, or it's going to be loaded/unloaded away from your supervision, you want something more durable than a Bass Safe.

+1 to anvil, calzone is also top notch, but I think anvil bought em. Give them both a call they ought to have a template for your instrument easily available.

+1

The Bass Safe is OK, but I like a heavy duty roadcase with fully
recessed hardware (latches, hindges, handles, etc.) much better,
see pic of mine below.

Here is where I got it:

http://www.affordable-cases.com/cata...tml?styleId=11

Get the Full ATA model. I have flown a P-bass, a Jazz bass, a 5 string
Lakland Skyline, and a Sadowsky P/J in mine. I think the contours are
cut for a Jazz, but the others all fit fine.

In a fit of insanity, I sprayed mine Olive Drab (with many coats of
correct metal/plastic primer and sanding, etc.). What a waste of time
and money that was...

However, the scrapes and gouges in the metal ball corners and edge
guards give you some idea of the beating it or any case will take from
the typical airlines. I have seen mine dropped/thrown from the hand of
a busy baggage person directly onto the concrete apron under the
plane in Dallas. No damage to the instrument after a dead fall of about
30 inches flat onto cement. I nearly fainted...

This case has now flown about 3 dozen times, and is even more scarred.
It is heavy and hard to fit it in the trunk or back seat of a small car,
as it is long (note yardstick in photo). Still, it had done its job well,
and I have yet to be charged for checking it.

Here it is:

Wow thanks for all the help. I've got some great leads thanks to everyone. Not sure exactly what is going to go down with this gig but its a hell of a trip from Windsor to Vancouver. I'm going keep my fingers crossed until I see some signatures.
