Is there a best way to prepare a bass for travel on a plane? (I fly tomorrow) Strings- on, off, loosened, normal? Latches- taped up, locked/unlocked/whatever, they'll just break em anyway Case- extra precautions/safety measures? Batteries (9volt)- removed/left in (hazardous materials?) Stickers/signs/pleas for mercy- are they useful/or not? FRAGILE? PLEASE HAMMER DON'T HURT EM Additional items- tuners, effects, pliers, cucumber in tinfoil... will these things cause a problem?
Lots has been written about what airlines are good/bad/downright disrepectful.... but I am hoping you guys can help with some other advice...
Mucho grazias

Both of my basses are EBMM, I checked them in the cases they came in. DO NOT LOCK THE CASE!!! If they want to check the contents they will break the case to get inside. Ask the person at the counter to place a few large FRAGILE stickers on the exterior of the case. Also make two index cards with your name, phone number and address on them. Put one inside and affix the other to the out side with some clear packing tape. Lastly don't for get to de-tune the strings.
I placed all my pedals, adapters and cables in a bag and took it as a carry on. No problem on the way there, but on the way back LAX security looked at me like I had six eyes until I explained what the mess of wires and circuits in my bag was. haha.
Safe travels!
OH! one last thing...
When you arrive at your destination, ask if they have an "ODD SIZE" baggage claim. Things like guitar/bass cases are often kept separate from normal baggage to avoid being crushed on the conveyer belt

Lots of people say NOT to lock the hardshell case, but I did anyway, and had no problems either. Just make sure you de-tune the strings and you're pretty much ready to go.
But then again, that was my experience so it might vary from yours ;p
EDIT: The people at the check-in took care of the procedures for me - they put the "fragile" sticker on my case, checked the case inside and out, and everything was good. |

this is a legitimate question, about bass, posed in Talkbass... and yet I can't seem to get much help here.
Yes, I have used the 'search' function, with limited success; so, I posted this hoping for practical feedback from bassists (the very reason you'd think TB exists).
The off-topic thread 'where is my neighbour going at 3am' is getting more action than mine... very frustrating... come on Talkbass, please

Bon Voyage.
