Fog Machine for outdoors...good idea or bad idea?

Sign in to disble this ad
My band is playing an outdoor concert this Saturday. We were looking into renting a fog machine (not a dry ice machine) just to add to the effect of our stage show. Do any of you guys have experience using fog machines outdoors?

If its even remotely windy,,,, i mean any wind at all... its a complete waste.

I saw Ronnie James Dio @ Cal Expo in Sacramento... he used heavy smoke, & the subtle breeze of the evening just blew it away.

It's better than indoors ... you don't have to breathe so much of that crap.

Outdoors probably won't be much use, it will always go the way you don't want it too. So you or any other member of the band maybe surrounded in a white mass of smoke, which is nice for a short time but can become annoying. The only way it might work is if you ran the smoke through a chiller and it can create the effect of dry ice without the dangers of real dry ice.
If you use lots of fog/smoke breathing too much in, will make your lungs feel tight and abit uncomfortable. Just as a warning.

You realize fog doesn't rise, smoke rises. Also fog will drift onto the audience. When we used to use fog machines we also used suction tubes below front edge of stage to pull the fog in and keep it from drifting out. Made for better effect and kept audience happier.

Are you talking about a fog machine, or a hazer? Hazers are used to bring out the effect of professional lighting, and look fantastic as long as the haze is dispersed (most times using a box fan). Fog is thicker, and as steveb brought up, sticks around the floor.

Yeah, and if someone sneezes into the fog juice, all those pathogens hitch a ride right out into everyone's respiratory tract.
