i know this is coming off kind of stupid, but i promise i'm asking for something other than folk metal. At least, not in the sense of, say, Korplikaani.
I'm sitting here with TS, listening to Electric Wizard, Doomsword, Scale The Summit, etc, thinking of different bas tones. And I as i think of this, i start thinking of different parts of the music fitting together, with influences of different genres into the metal. And it made me want to listen to The Decemberists, for the clean, "pretty" vocal delivery, and sparse instrumentation. Trying to tie them into metal, i thought of something like symphonic gothic metal, such as Leaves eyes and (to an extent) Nightwish. But then i realized that the instrumentation is too lush. And yes, i'm including Doomsword as too lush, because of the epic-ness of the lyrics.
Long story short, does anybody knows of any bands with sparse, slow, doom music, but with clean, pretty, or symphonic singing? Not so much "epic", but "pretty"? My vast music library fails me. |

It's folk-rock versions of traditional songs, but some of it sounds kinda Sabbathy but more sparse, like "Sheep-crook And Black Dog" or "King Henry". Or Fairport Convention doing "Tam Lin" on the "Liege & Lief" album, that's got a metally bit between verses.

Check out Grayceon. They play an odd mix of sludge, doom, progressive, and since they have a cellist instead of a bassist they also incorporate a bit of symphonic and some chamber type music. It's very good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY_mO_QkcDc |

Interestingly enough, both her parents are in Steeleye Span, who have already been mentioned.

Instrumentation wise you'd probably really like Agalloch but hate the vocals.
Red Sparroews maybe?
Minsk might work for you as well. |

probably not exactly what your looking for, but they have some acoustic infused stuff that is killer. Here check out the tracks 'undeceived' and 'meadows of silence' http://www.rhapsody.com/extol

Their music is inspired by a bit of everything from grindcore to folk and even though the singer, Dax Riggs, uses harsh abrasive vocals he also uses a lot of clean vocals. The only word I can think of to describe the sound of his clean vocals would be otherworldly. Acid Bath broke up probably 15 or so years ago after the death of their bass player who was killed by a drunk driver. The aforementioned singer has been involved in other projects since then such as Agents of Oblivion, Golgatha, Deadboy & The Elephantmen to name a few. You should check it all out but in reference to your question Acid Bath might be something you're looking for. |

between this and the "metal bands \m/" thread i have a lot of listening to do! of the ones i have listened to so far, Lyriel is probably the closest to what i was hearing (at least that i can remember now, i listened before work and now it's afterwards, haha) |
