Ok, i'll probably get maimed for this but anywho, here goes.

I've used the "seach" function on here many times and can't ever seem to find quickly what i'm looking for. I've put in single words w/ and w/out quotes and multiple workds w/ and w/out quotes and find that i never really find what i'm searching for off hand. I usually have to do lots of extensive searching and unnecessary reading to find my topic if i find it at all. I've also seen members get po'd at other members because they ask a question that has been posted about. I've done a search for things after someone has said "go do a search" and find nothing. Is it just a pain to find stuff on here or can someone suggest a good search technique?

sorry for the ignorant post. discuss....

try searching for keywords in the titles only, that way you don't get so many irrelevant threads that simply contain the word you searched, but are not specifically on the subject.

Yeah the search tab is a pain. I think it puts threads in order of how many times any word in the search shows up in a thread, without regard to how many times all the words show up . . . does that make sense?

If I'm searching for an effect/bass/amp review or viewpoint, I'll search in the title only.

yeah, that makes sense. I've usually try to narrow my search down to key words. I guess there is just a ton of content on here to go through. Its all good. Thanks everyone for the input.

My advice would be:

Select the appropriate forums only, not all of them. You can select more than one by holding down the Control key and clicking on them.

Use the "Search Titles" option instead of "Search Thread".

Make judicious use of the phrases "and" and "or".

you really should have done a search before asking a question like this

just kidding! i would also recommend showing results as posts rather than as threads, as that way you get a little preview of each post, and you don't have to sift through quite as much extraneous crap

Yeah, the TB search kinda sucks. Ah well. Using advanced search properly can help circumnavigate the majority of problems you may encounter.

Searching is an art - you have to know something about what you're looking for, you have to be able to spell, know about the logic used, you have to have a strategy etc. etc.

It always amuses me how people think that just because they have a search system it will be easy!!

I'm not talking about anybody here now - but rather directors of organisations that I've worked for - the classic line I've heard many times is :

" I just want to be able to press a button and get what I want"

Errr...define : what you want - well it should know that!!

Exactly - you need to know what you're doing!
