There seems to be alot more traffic on the bass and amps forums than the Technique or General Instruction forums. Are our priorities wrong? Are we more worried about gear than making music and learning to be better players.

Nah, it's just easier to talk about gear than it is to talk about music.

Theory is theory. Gear is much more subjective.

That may a generalization that's not necessarily true.

We don't know the level of skill of those in the gear sections. Plus, there's way more theory info in other places than just TB. But this is the only place to discuss bass gear.

Thinking out loud...

Why didn't anyone ever tell me bossa nova sounded so good?

Hi.

Has it ever occured to You that perhaps the "real" musicians are rehearsing or gigging and don't have that much time hanging around when P vs. J & Fender vs. rest of the bass manufacturers, or tube vs. SS watts & Ampeg vs. rest of the manufactuers debate is raging .

When I joined, OT won hands down, but since the change that posts in there didn't increase the post count anymore, it lost quite a bit of it's appeal it seems.

Regards
Sam

Whatever the reasons are, I find OT to be pretty weak compared to the rest of TB which is outstanding, IMO. Of course, there are exceptions sometimes, but not many.

I think there's several reasons for this:

1. Products for bass are being developed (or remarketed) at an astonishing rate lately. And seeing how bassists are very concerned with their sound, they want to find out about them and compare them to known standards.

2. Theory isn't changing that much. "Did you hear that new interval? How does that sound compared to a fifth?" is something your not going to hear.

3. Many bassists have teachers to help them apply theory.

4. Theory is not fun for all and most bassists didn't start playing bass to learn theory. Theory comes later when you really want to LEARN bass.

I'm not worried about it. I also don't get involved in either forums really. If i have questions i ask.

This. You just don't see threads entitled "NMD (New Mode Day)" or "Chord Tones at Shows: Part V." There's just not the same demand for theory porn as there is for bass porn and amp porn.

That's cool. I probably need to jump into the theory threads more.

Does that prove the ops post?
