I finally found 1 . woohoo. Anyways after that my bass teacher showed me how to play 16th notes. and we play 16th notes at 60 beats per minute witch is 8th notes at 120 beats per minute, anyways we played for 20 minutes straight of 16th notes for the entire lesson. and then when I got home I played for a little while. Anyways when I woke up this morning my fingers were so stiff they hurt, ok here is my question What can I do about the pain for next time if I want to play 16th notes that long?

Keep playing them. Keep your playing light and even and you'll build your own endurance.

Stop playing 16th notes for 20 minutes straight! Ouch!

Keep doing it though, the pain is good.

Give yourself a day or two. If you don't want to stop playing for that time, just don't do 8/16 note exercises very much for the next day or two. When you play, stretch out your fingers before you get going. Also make sure you're playing lightly...you can play faster longer!

20 solid minutes of 16th is kinda crazy - for anyone - take those exercises in smaller chunks. I am a little concerned about your teacher's process here - what does he think that will accomplish for you other then improper muscle development and pain?

Don't be in a hurry to get fast - speed actually comes from practicing everything slowly and gradually increasing speed with your metronome. Running your fingers through finger stamina marathons at this early stage is probably going do more harm then good. A weight-lifter does not START by trying to max out his abilities, right? A runner does not start with a marathon or by sprinting full-out right away, right? Everyone gradually works up to these things. Same rules applies here.

But to answer your questions about the pain:
Aside from practicing everyday (NOT doing 16th for 20 minute stretches, just practicing scales, arpeggios and other left and right hand exercises), make sure you are stretching.

Also, Ibuprophen is good for muscle pain. But like everything, don't over-do it! You should feel 'the good pain' that comes from good exercise, not 'the bad pain' that come from abusing yourself.

Bass player stretching exercises:
1. Stretch fingers back opposite of the joint. 10-15 seconds each hand.

2. Bend hand forward as far as possible stretching wrist for 10-15 seconds each hand.

3. With hands and fingers extended in front of you, slowly rotate each hand as far left and right as possible 10 times.

4. Starting in same position, rotate hands in circular motion through full range of motion.

5. Drop hands to side and shake out.

6. Pull elbow with opposite hand across body. 10-15 seconds each arm.

7. Clasp hands and extend palms above head.

8. Find muscle that controls arm movement above chest and under collarbone. Massage and warm up muscle.

9. Find forearm muscle that controls finger movement. Massage and warm up muscle.

Thank you Tzer and everyone else for the concerns and help. Oh yeah Tzer I've asked my teacher if we could do that to see if I could or not. and I know I can. Btw it sounded awesome playing at 60 beats per minut with 16th notes. which like I said above post equal's out to 120 beats per minute at 8ths notes lol.

-edit- Forgot to say Thanks again Tzer for the exercise tips I will definitely do them.
