Found some old magazines

Sign in to disble this ad
So a few years ago I got handed a box with some stuff in it from my high shool days. A bunch of old magazines and some other stuff. I took it home and without looking through it I tossed into storage. Today I was looking for something else but I got curious and dug into the box, and wow! Total memory shock, there are like 7 or 8 issues of Guitar Magazine from 1985 - 1987 in my hands. Tons of guitar and bass sheet music for all kinds of classic and 80s rock tunes, old photos of, articles by and about, and interviews with legends and people I've long since forgotten about. I just read an old interview with Geddy Lee talking about Power Windows and his gear and development. One of the covers has a photo of Ronnie James Dio and Vivian Campbell on it.

When I first saw the magazines my first thought was that I'd be tossing them all. But after thumbing through them for a while I think I will throw them into one of those archive boxes they sell for photograph prints. They won't take up more space on my bookshelf than a dictionary. The sheet music alone is great, but these feel like historical articfacts to me now. The ads from the 80s are hilarious, with the female mullets and the wild guitar paint jobs.

I hear ya...I still have a pile of '70s (& a few '80s) era Guitar Player magazines.
Just pulled out the March '75 issue for some Ralphe Armstrong info.

...and you're correct-
The Ads are often hilarious.

I'm thinking I'll make an index card that lists which music is in which issue and then they'll be a handy reference, as well as a reminder of how fun and silly the 80s were.

One highlight (lowlight?) from a one of those other '80s guitar magazines I have stashed away was a Yngwie Malmsteen Blindfold Test.

Everyone got a 1-star or 0 star review...guys like Jeff Beck, Clapton, ya know, the architects of '60s Blues-Rock guitar. Malmsteen's biggest issue was how they were not beniding strings "to pitch". Over & over, he asked the tester, "...is everyone tone deaf"?
I almost fell off the commode in hysterics.

a)Blues = something other than "correct pitch"
b)It's Rock...it's only supposed to be but so good (accoring to Tom Petty).

Yeah, several of the mags I found have Yngwie all over them. I read one interview with him (and Billy Sheehan) and he complains about people saying he has a big head, then he proceeds to say how much other guitar players suck. Elsewhere I've read he's a nice guy.

Just read it here: Smells Like Mean Spirit Interview

It's priceless! What's surprising, though, is his praise for Dream Theater.

That's pretty cool.
He busted just about everyone's balls.

I also recall another thing with him...he likes bassists that play with picks. He also plays bass on his own records because no one can play bass like he hears it (he did mention Jeff Berlin as the only bassist that could maybe pull his stuff off...even though he plays fingerstyle).

Yngwie's also a lot skinnier in these old mags, LOL. True for many of us I suppose.

The other interesting thing from my 80s archive was the issue with Ronnie James Dio and Vivan Campbell on the front cover. Inside is an interview with the two of them getting along swimmingly. The glory days of "Dio" the band!
