Just listening to Sheik Yerbouti, which always makes me laugh, and it occurred to me that I can't think of anyone else with such a tremendous talent - genius, even - for music that used it almost exclusively for comic effect.
Discuss please.
EDIT Oops, meant to post this in "Miscellaneous" - sorry, people.

EDIT Oops, meant to post this in "Miscellaneous" - sorry, people. | I may have misunderstood you but I don't think comic effect was his sole musical purpose. He has a large amount of instrumental music, both orchestral and jazz oriented.

I still find it hilarious that, although it is entirely instrumental, it still managed to garner a "Parental Advisory-Explicit Lyrics" sticker. That man had a reputation that far overshadowed his music. I listen to "Joe's Garage" and "Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation" a lot. I miss Frank.

I read one of his biographies by Barry Miles, thought it was a great read. It was cool to see that even though he often came off as an egomaniac, that he was also human and open to lots of different types of media. |

| | | | I love Zappa. I agree with the first post. I was going to argue the point about Frank using his gift "almost exclusively for comic effect" - but the more I think about it, that's not too far from the truth. The only examples I can think of to dispute that statement are instrumentals. Granted, Frank Zappa did a lot of different things - he was a legitimate classical composer (and there's nothing funny about that) but most of his rock and roll, while not all of it is the "potty humor" people often associate him with, most of it contains an element of humor. Does humor belong in music? I say yes. |

The instrumental stuff is amazing.....but the first time I heard apostrophe, I nearly p!ssed myself laughing more than once. I still can't help but laugh when I hear it...or worse, like now, that I'm just thinking about it.

Love "Zoot Allures" for pure guitar/instrument genius! Includes afore mentioned "Black Napkins".
I miss Frank too - he was a great social watchdog. Not many of those around any more.
