Frank Zappa Instrumentals

So the other day I was at my local library looking for some CDs to borrow. I came upon a Zappa CD called "The Grand Wazoo". I've had some of his instrumentals CDs in the past, including Hot Rats and Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar and others (all my cds got stolen about 5 years ago when my apartment got robbed). I borrowed "The Grand Wazoo" hoping it was an instrumental CD and it was, and a pretty good one too.

I find his songs with lyrics a little too hokey and much prefer his instrumental stuff.

This got me thinking... what other of Zappa's CDs are strictly (more or less) instrumental?

Amazing precision there with the guitar work.

"Waka/Jawaka" is in the same vein as "The Grand Wazoo". Actually, both albums are from the same time frame (when Zappa was wheelchair bound because of injuries suffered after an audience member pushed him off stage) and were released one after the other (being "Waka/Jawaka" the first).

BTW, "The Grand Wazoo" is one of my all-time favorite Zappa albums.

There's lots of 'em. Also check out "Strictly Genteel", a compilation of symphonic peices.

Not all instrumental (since Willie the Pimp has words), but Hot Rats is an awesome jam album.

I'll echo Alvaro and Ron Quito's remarks... Waka/Jawaka is killer. It is about 1/2 instrumental, and half tracks with vocals, but the tracks with vocals are still VERY instrumental heavy. They also don't have much of Frank singing/talking, and almost entirely have other people singing.

Great album, killer songs, killer instrumentations, especially the horn sections on Big Swifty and the pedal steel in "Your Mouth." Sweet as hell.

I think Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar all or mostly instrumental. Some good stuff on there too...don't let the song titles scare you off. "Variations on the Carlos Santana secret chord progression" is awesome..

Hey ::Bassist::, which library? It's funny - I just took out a bunch of Zappa CDs from the New West library. They've got a good selection.

+1 to "Jazz from Hell" and "Make a Jazz Noise"!

It would be hard to pick a purely instrumental album because there are such fantastic pieces scattered everywhere (and some tunes with lyrics, some not). Some of the tunes with words are hokey, some are insanely funny.

My fave zappa instrumental (which I've nearly finished learning, just need to practice speeding up the ol' fingers to play the end) is Echinda's Arf (Of You) - most notably from Roxy & Elsewhere (best version ,imho). Love that song. Love love love!
