Trumpet player, Freddie Hubbard remains hospitalized and is reportedly near death (according to KJAZZ, LA's jazz radio).
Raised in the midwest, he came to his own a couple of 3 times. As a younger guy he did lots of work in NYC with the bop biggies of the 50-60's, stuff that I wouldn't hear until I was in college nearly a decade later. This work includes 'Going Up' with Paul Chambers on bass, and "Africa Brass" with Coltrane. He worked with the Jazz Messengers after Lee Morgan was blown away.
His 2nd set of works are pretty well known. A CD that retains a permanent spot in my car's juke box, Wayne Shorters "Speak No Evil" hails from this time. This era also included Herbie's "Maiden Voyage", Coleman's "Free Jazz" and Coltrane's "Ascension".
In the 70's he gave us "Red Clay" and "Little Sunflower" which are staples in many jazz books/set lists.
Personally, these were seminal albums (dating myself) for my young jazz training as I traveled with them on the road playing in '70's RnR/R&B acts/bands and listening to them along with Tony Williams' "Bum's Rush" and the Mahavishnu Orchestra on a Sears portable stereo record player.
He's an interesting player, one who worked alongside 'name' musicians much like we bass players. I appreciate having seen him play live a couple of times and hope that his journey is filled with memories of appreciative audiences.
