Free Sheet Music?

Sign in to disble this ad
Would it kill someone to put sheet music somewhere on the internet for free? Everywhere you have to pay for the sheet music, as if it's their song! I could see if I was paying Joe Zawinul personally for a transcription of A Remark You Made (RIP Joe and Jaco)...

Anyway, does anyone know where I can find free sheet music?
Is this possible?

not legally I don't think, unless the piece is out of copyright.

I wasn't suggesting pirating! LOL I almost included that in the original post, but I do not mean to pirate music! I mean legal sources.

Legal sources of copyrighted sheet music are not free, by definition. The owners of the copyright are legally entitled to their royalties and those are paid out of the purchase price of the sheet music.

Yes. In fact the RIAA had tried to shut down the big tab sites about a year ago.

This is true, successfully in the case of www.mysongbook.com.
I don't see why it's illegal, though...I could see if they were making tabs and then selling them for their own money instead of paying the artist for them, but they're just trying to help others learn songs.
Money is the focus of the world...tsk tsk...

I would think that (unless music to you is just a hobby) you would like to be paid for your talents. The main way songwriters get paid is through royalties, both performance fees from other musicians and publishing.

There's an attitude in the world, that because hearing something doesn't seem to cost us anything, then music should be free in all its forms.

But when a commercial radio station plays a song, the writer gets paid through a portion of the revenue of the station's commercials. When a song is downloaded through Rhapsody or other service, a part of the fee goes to the songwriter. XM or Sirius subscription fees pay the royalties.

As a songwriter or performer, the owning of a copyright is a long-standing legal right. And those who wish to avoid payment of legal royalties are rightly considered to be pirates. If you had written a great song, you would want what you are entitled to, wouldn't you?

After a number of years (is it 28, renewable for another 28? I forget...) a song may go into "Public Domain" and can then be printed and performed royalty free. And there may be changes to these laws, prompted by descendants of the songwriters.

A better value than individual sheet music are the compilation books. And I don't think that downloadable sheet music (for a fee) is far off. But who knows?

Just watch out for the ASCAP and BMI police!

If you're going to use the sheet music to make money playing the tune, paying for a properly copyrighted piece of sheet music where the songwriter get paid makes sense. It's the cost of doing business. If it was so easy to write a hit song, everyone would have one. The songwriter's product allows you to make money by playing it live.

I read an article awhile back where BMI (iirc) was going club to club and if the juke box was playing, sending a bill for royalties to the club owner.

If you were making a living off of royalties, yeah, it could kill someone for them not to get paid. Not being able to pay for your health insurance because you don't have enough money could easily get you dead.

It would seem that musicians would have a better understanding of this than the general public, but , I guess not.

Alright when you put it that way, it makes sense. But the point I meant to make was that I wasn't intending to play anywhere where I'd be getting paid for playing their music.

However, you are correct in what you said. I didn't think about that end of it. How very selfish of me. I should know anyway, I haven't been able to write anything worth playing.
