iTunes (free software) can also do it, but you have to change its default "import" setting from AAC to MP3.

I don't have a link but I'm sure Google will. I have a shareware program called Switch that can convert pretty much any audio file.

Didn't Audacity at one time require a separate plug-in to convert to mp3? Or did I imagine that?

Yes, so use LAME http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php. Pretty widely regarded as the best MP3 encoder out there.

DbPowerAmp. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ It works great. Can convert almost any format to another. Also it comes with a nice CD ripping program and other goodies.

If you can deal with a WMA instead of MP3, Windows Movie Maker will also convert it. And I think that should come on your PC if you've got XP.
