Fret questions

Sign in to disble this ad
i just have a couple of questions about frets. how can there be regular frets or medium and also jumbo spacing? i thought the scale length was ment to make it have a wider spacing? also i heard that a 24 fret bass just have a few extra frets on the end of the fretboard well how come the end of a 21 fret fb can be the samelength as a 24 fret at the end of the neck/start of the body? like this 24 fret

21 fret
same scale length.

im only 14 so dont make fun of my curiosity

They actually aren't the same length, though it does look like it. Jumbo or normal means the size of the fret wire, not how far the frets are space. All 34" scale basses have frets in the same places, so the 3 on a 24 fret are just added on to the end. Notice the end of the FB is closer to the neck pickup?

thanks i think the body shape of each bass gives the illusion of the fretboard/neck length

Why 21 or 24?

1) Twenty four frets finishes out four octaves in all keys. Twenty one will only get you three plus something.

2) Probably more important, some people want 24 some don't care one way or the other.

3) I just counted mine - I have 24. Never been up that high LOL. Probably never will.

Yo tambien. Whenever I hear someone grousing about a bass "only" having 22 frets, I think to myself "You're a BASS player, aren't you? What are you doing up there, anyway?"

Depending on the way the body was designed, some 24 fret basses have the fingerboard extended right under the spot where your hand should be when slapping. Giving less room under the string. This can be remedied with different body designs and bridge placements.

For example, I tried a bongo with 24 frets, and couldn't slap properly, but my ibanez sr905 doesn't get in the way at all.

ahhk i remember hearing something like the reason why 24 frets arent good for slapping is because theres less room for the string to snap back than a fretboard thats "flush" with the end of the neck
