Daniel Gildenlow of Pain of Salvation uses a fretless guitar on some songs live.

It's been done, and it sounds really cool, kinda eastern/sitary. There's a couple guys on sevenstring.org (another forum I hang out at) who have defretted their guitars and have loved it.

Indeed he did; most evident on the tune "Model Man". (edit: sorry, it's actually the tune "Man With An Open Heart" where the fretless guitar is best audible.) He also played it all over his Twang Bar King album.

Also see if you can find a copy of Randy Roos' long out-of-print LP Mistral, where he plays a fretless guitar that has a stainless steel fingerboard (!)

I went to school with Tim Donahue, who's apparently considered one of the pioneers of fretless electric guitar. Back in 1982 Tim was playing stuff that was mind-bogglingly cool sounding on fretless guitars he built himself; I can hardly imagine what he sounds like these days (...though I guess I could just turn on the darn speakers attached to this computer & find out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZUmgwF6SxM )

He started playing it live like last summer or so maybe even later. If you youtube it you can see some. Just search Pain of Salvation. I think "Undertow" might have fretless guitar.

why is that copying?

they could easily turn around and say bass copied guitar originally in fashion (from upright to "guitar" form).

a fret less instrument is just a fret less instrument

I heard somewhere that Frank Zappa played a fretless guitar.

Honestly, I would have to hear it. I've heard some guitarists get away with really smooth transitions between notes, without having a fretless. I don't think you'd get the "mwah" from a guitar, would you?
It depends on the style, anyway. I don't see why not, to be honest, but I don't know if you'd use it to play death metal.
