Fun songs for acoustic guitar and vocals

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, so, I'm a hippie now... I guess... anyways. I've got my accoustic guitar on my lap... and I'm having fun finding classic hippie songs and chording my way through and singing along... so far...

Steve Miller - The Joker
Grateful Dead - Casey Jones

I told you... it don't get much hippier. With my long hair... and I didn't shower today.

I'm mainly trying to understand vocals in general, and this seems to be a good way to get it down in a rock sense. Besides, it's just fun. Three chords, and I'm like awesome at guitar man!

Man, how could I forget about the Who.

I haven't listened to CSN(Y) since I hated hippies (ha, I was such a metal kid), I'll have to RE check them out.

Oh oh I know this one! Try Melissa by the Allman Bros., any Bob Dylan song, some George Harrison, Sugar Magnolia and Friend of the Devil by the Dead, Embyonic Journey by Jefferson Airplane, lots of Phish (Train Song comes to mind), some Floyd, some Simon & Garfunkel, Feelin' Alright by Traffic, and some Willie Nelson.

I used to think I was a hippie...but I couldn't stand not taking showers and my long hair just got in my way.

Breathe and Time by Floyd have become my fave songs lately to sing and play on the guitar, relatively simple. That and Brown Eyed Women by the dead have kept me occupied, although last night I learned Neil Youngs Everyone Knows This is Nowhere, and Cinnamon Girl (which requires drop d tuning really). Neil is easy

I was always partial to Dead, Stones and the Airplane.
Embryonic Journey noted above is not exactly a beginner's
piece though. Today and How Do You Feel are better choices
from the Airplane.

Fat Angel - Airplane or Donovan

Dead - I Know You Rider
Not Fade Away / Goin Down The Road Feelin Bad medley
Uncle John's Band
Playin in the Band
Me & Boby McGee

Stones
Can't Always Get What You Want
Sympathy for the Devil
Street Fighting Man
Love In Vain
No Expectations
Heartbreaker

Honorable Mention:
Revolution by the Beatles.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
The Letter - Cocker version
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Allman Bros.
Black Magic Woman - Fleetwood Mac (Santana)

LOL! I looked at that list and noted, my band plays most
of these songs. YIKES!

Ok matt...here's the deal. I'll do keyboard and bass you do accoustic and bass.

We'll both do singing duties and switch back and forth on the instruments.

Make good money doing coffee house gigs and other places that will pay good money for live music but don't have physical or sonic space for a full size band.

Then we can still play larger places too.

My guitar players and I do it.

Every once in a while we do an acoustic jam, they
play 6's, I play the 'extended range' guitar, a
Martin HD12-28.

It comes out good. Em-D Em-Bm barres at the seventh
fret. They take the lead harmonies for the
intro and I take the rhythm (as the guitards don't usually have any).

Oh, and on the way back from lunch, a few other
staples came up. In G.

The Weight - The Band
Willin' - Little Feat

Sounds good, but before I join up, I have to warn you. I'm not very good at vocals... or accoustic guitar... or bass... and I live in another state than you.

So when's the next gig?

Trivial.

Trivial at best.

I don't own a keyboard yet, nor do I have experience playing them. What I do have is musical ability and desire to utilize that along with the abilities of a synthesizer.

What's important is if you have the ability to be an entertainer.

That's more important than being a musician if you want to make money. The trick is doing both.
