Funeral Doom/Death-Doom

*Disclaimer* I'm sure this isn't the first time this has come up, but I made my own thread because I'm searching for something more specific than just anything that falls under the doom umbrella.

I've been listening to Evoken a lot lately and they remind me a lot of Morgion - a band I've liked for years that also hasn't been together for years. That and old (really old) My Dying Bride, back when Aaron did deathmetal growls.

Anyway, I'd like to hear more music like this and what better place to ask than a music (well, musicians') forum?

Normally I listen to a lot of blackmetal and thrashy stuff (when I'm not listening to classic rock on the radio), but I've been going through my collection and rediscovering stuff I haven't listened to in a while. I really never delved into funeral/death-doom and now I wish I had more of it to listen to. I have a few "melodic" doom albums by bands like Daylight Dies and Swallow the Sun, but those bands tend to try to be uplifting at points and I'm not a big fan of sappy stuff for the sake of being progressive - at least not from music that's supposed to be intentionally depressing.

My roommate listens to a lot of stoner/doom and sludge, but that's not specifically what I'm after, either. Listening to Evoken is like rotting away in a freezing stone tomb.

Anyway, any suggestions, TB? :)

The following are some of my favorite bands within this genre:
Ahab
Asunder
Mournful Congregation
Esoteric
Lycus
Anhedonist
Loss
Thergothon
Skepticism

Also-Autopsy's "Mental Funeral" has alot of Doom influence on that album.
Edit-Not really death or funeral doom but since you said you like black metal, check out coffinworm(great mix of black and sludge metal).

Cathedral? I'm not a particular afficionado of the sort of stuff you're after, but these guys tick the box for me.

Moonspell, amorphis, katatonic

+1 on Ahab. Amazing music, they blow my mind every time I listen to them.

Check out Bell Witch. They make Sabbath sound like the Monkees.

Thank you so much for the recommendations. I really believed this thread wouldn't get a single reply!

I'm going to check out all the bands mentioned here that I'm not already familiar with.

Katatonia? I have a few old albums from all of these bands and I consider them more gothic metal. Thanks for posting, though!

You're dating yourself... ;)

Keep the feedback coming, TB doomsters!

I vouch for Mournful Congregation. By far one of my fave funeral doom bands.

I'll add Shape of Despair to the list.

I find it amusing that there are sub sub sub genres like goth vs doom vs sludge vs "funeral". I must be out of my element here as a tech, speed, thrash, prog, math, death, grind, neo classical and groove specialist. Lol

Agreed, Love that band. First time I heard "Call of The Wretched Sea" I spent about 2 and half weeks listening to it. Couldn't put it down.

I can't believe I forgot them but check out Disembowelment as well.

That sucks man, same thing happened to a friend of mine except it was a vinyl(gatefold too nonetheless). Now his new rule of thumb: Never share vinyl with someone you share a bed with.:rollno:

Great band though:cool:

I've not really been into doom for a few years now, but Shape Of Despair and Funeral are still pretty much top of my list of favorite metal bands. If you haven't heard their stuff, I'd recommend Angels Of Distress and Illusions' Play by SoD and From These Wounds and In Fields of Pestilent Grief by Funeral. All their music is incredible, but these albums give me goosebumps every time.

Keeping this alive because I'm always looking for new doom bands.

Just discovered a new one yesterday: Rituals of the Oak.

Great funeral doom band, plus it has female vocals, something really rare in doom. It's great!

If you guys haven't listened to Swallowed you should check it out! It's Doom/Death band from Finland!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAGVlouuuhQ

Yes they're kick ass but it's not a Funeral Doom band.
