Death - Voice of the Soul

It's an instrumental, just acoustic and electric guitars and nothing else. It is quite possibly the most melodic, emotional, sad, and at the same time beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. One of my favourite songs of all time. I can't stress enough how amazing this song is, give it a listen.

It's a really beautiful song, but it only becomes beautiful after you watch Donnie Darko.

The music video for that song is really strange, in an awesome, yet depressing way.

I listen to some emo, so as far as depressing songs go, I've got an entire friggin library.

Have you ever hear the original version of it? It's by Tears for Fears, the guys that did "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and "Shout." It's not nearly as sad or touching-Jules' cover is much better.

Good list. I'd add 'Cemetary Gates' by Pantera, and 'The Unforgiven' by Metallica.

Graeme

I love Dime's chorus riff with all the artificial harmonics. The Ebow part on the Unforgiven is pretty damn cool as well.

Thought of some more.

Tom Waits - Clap Hands
At The Drive In - Non-zero possibility

I loved Donnie Darko, and that song has been stuck in my head ever since I saw it. Now I finally know what it's called! YAY.

I much prefer the Tears for Fears original - this is true to the lyrics, which are clearly about mental illness - the cover version is just overly sentimental - the sort of thing Americans love (obviously why it was put in the film) and we hate in Britain!!

(Although some younger people are becoming tainted by years of watching Hollywood schmaltz! )

I'm with Bruce. I like the cover, but the original rules. TFF are a great band with some amazing songs under their belts.
