do guitar centers normally have earplugs like ER-20s in stock all the time?

They generally have ear plugs...not sure what exact kinds though. They do carry the ones with the built in filters though...give them a call or check their website.

I don't think they carry ER-20's. The do have Hearos and others that look similar, but I don't know how well they work.

AFAIK the Hearos Hi-fidelity plug, which I've bought at GC here in San Diego, is identical to the ER-20, just rebranded.

Correct. The Hearos package even has the Etymotic Research (ER) logo on the back.

And yes, my local GC carries them in stock.

You should be able to find Hearos in most bigger drug stores, too.
