Gene for left-handedness is found!

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, for all the "experts" ( ) that keep saying that left-handedness is a learned preference, not a congenital disposition, here you go.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6923577.stm (And don't the miss the interesting articles on the right-upper column.)

This is sort of in reference to this thread:

Why left handed basses?????

Sorry to rehash and old, sour thread, but I feel validated after reading this article.

(Mods, please move this thread to Miscellaneous if necessary; the original thread was in Basses.)

The Oxford University-led team believe carrying the gene may also slightly raise the risk of developing psychotic mental illness such as schizophrenia.

can anyone blame us leftys for being schitzy? basses are hard to find as it is, and to cap it all they're more expensive when you do find them. it cant cost more to simply build it the oppisite way round. GOD.

I also play "righty." I didn't know any better. It was comfortable enough. I can't see playing any other way now.

that is an interesting article, but I don't know if I believe that--I use my left hand primarily, but in many cases like golf and bass, I am a righty...unless I am ambidexterous and I don't know it

What about me? I am ambidextrous- I can use both hands to write and play bass as well (although I prefer to play leftie).

Cheeky effort!! But i forgive you!

Nah, I play bass leftie because when I tried bass for the first time, I was shown how to play on a left-handed bass. Then when I got my own I played in the same way.

But seriously, the article I read in the UK newspapers was that it increased the chances of left-handedness, not causing it. As a former psychology student, I know there is no such thing in bio-psychology as a direct cause and effect. Otherwise it becomes too simple.

Also, what about people who swap hands, such as amputees and also some people who were forced to swap at school because it was seen as abnormal to write left-handed?
