Getting out there

I have a question for some of the more experienced players here -
What would you suggest to someone (me) who wants to start getting some gig experience and playing in some different places. I've been playing at my church for a long time (few years) and would like to play in different settings, but I don't know where to start. Should I contact someone? Would forming a band be the best option? I just want to know where to start. I'm a pretty competent player and can sight read well. Just not a lot of experience outside of church (btw, I play many different styles in church). I would appreciate suggestions by all of you experienced members.

Talk to the musicians in your church group, maybe someone knows someone who needs a bass player. Check with the music stores, most have a place to post information. Check with Craigslist... can be weird, but also informative and perhaps a gig too. Go to places that have live music and talk to the musicians. If there are any 'open mic' or jam sessions places in your town go there.... not to get a gig, but to meet people and perhaps play and show your stuff. Performing live music is not a place for shy people.... and you can't be shy about going after a gig. If you are shy by nature, suck it up and do what you have to do.

Most good gigs are had by word of mouth. If a good musician refers you then that's enough for most people.

a good open jam is a great source for meeting other players. you might be surprised how many fledgling gigs are dying for a solid, level-headed, bass player.

+1 on all the great suggestions.

Start watching your local craigslist (musicians section) everyday,
or better yet place your own ad.
Its easy, free and bass players are usually in high demand.
(just be honest about your skills, experience and desired situation)

+1000 on all the suggestions here! 'specially the jam sessions. Time to take your "wares" out to the street and show them to the masses. Find the jams and go sign up. Meet the players there; the "regulars" will be glad to see some fresh blood. Weirdly enough; I met a trumpet player doing a church gig that lead me to a big band gig, and then met more and more people through that. Sometimes it only takes one chance meeting to really take off! Have fun and good luck!
