Getting your music on TV shows

We recently played with an awesome pop punk band called The Copyrights from Carbondale, IL. They're not a huge band, but they have a good following. While talking to them after the gig about crappy MTV shows, the singer told us he likes to watch those shows because they'll play clips of their songs and from their friend's band's songs. What is the process of getting my band's songs on those shows?! He gets some good checks from it and I think it'd be a great way to get some extra cash for the band!

Anybody have any experience with this?

Why not contact MTV and ask them about it?

I have tried, but their contact information on their website isn't exactly user friendly. I was hoping someone had some experience on this matter.
