I do it every week, when I go to band practice. When it's for a show or a road trip I only use hard cases. Too many people handling my gear to be comfortable.

Don't get a crappy gig bag, and you won't have to worry about your bass.

I have a mono single and an Ibanez double hybrid cases and both are up to the task and easy to stow. I rarely bother with hardcases anymore. Especially since I can backpack two basses and free my hands to lug in my amp or cab. I hate making extra trips when long walks to the car are involved.

Yes.

The two basses that I use for gigs already have their share of dents, cracks and scratches, and that includes a used Pedulla that I paid four figures for. They're tools and I like to travel light. I use a Fender Deluxe double gig bag.

I'm too clumsy... I always use a hard case wherever I go.

The gig bags in question i assume are materially the same as body bags , I've seen those and agree they are off putting, maybe good enough for a ...gibson say.:P

Real gig bags have two inches of foam everywhere.

And as described , it's a gig bag , not a shipping container or designed for touring lower Slobovia.

so dont let strangers touch your bag!

My favorite bass rests comfortable in a hardcase, whichever other bass comes along gets the gig bag.

I have several nice gig bags and use them 90% of the time. I'm in and out on average 3-4 days/week, so a hard case gets old very quickly - especially when I carry 2 basses, in which case I use a double bag. I'd rather put my basses in bags and put them in my truck than have them ride in the (uncovered) bed of the truck in hard cases.

I do have a closet full of hard cases, and some of those have basses in them, but for my daily in/out, a good quality bag is far more convenient. Maybe if you hardly leave the house, then a hard case is fine, but if you're in and out regularly, a good bag is the way to go.

Edit: Now I will use hard cases if I'm traveling far and the basses won't be in the cab with me anyway.

Yup. If I'm not driving I prefer carrying the bass on my back.

My bass is in a gig bag right now! I like the convenience of the bag for short local stuff. If I'm driving a great distance, or stashing my bass where other bands are stashing their stuff, I like the hard case.

I've seen my basses survive stuff in my Incase and Reunion Blues Continental bags that would have ended badly in a hard case.

Unless I'm on tour, my basses go to every gig in gigbags. If they're getting packed with all the other amps, drum cases etc., or going on a plane, then they get the hardcase.

I only have hard cases. But, I've been tempted to buy a gig bag on a few occasions.

My question is, if I bought a gig bag and painted a lurid scene on the outside, would it then be appropriate to refer to it as a bawdy bag?

I use gig bags most of the time but for road work or if I am sharing transportation then I use a hard case.

Gig bag for short trips and local stuff. Long distances, and multiple people touching my stuff means the hard case comes out.

I am super paranoid about my babies. I owned a Parker Fly Bass which would not fit into anything but the bag that it came in or a custom built hardshell. I used the gig-bag without an issue.

I also own a Skjold PSD that came in a Skjold gig-bag. The bag is as close to a hardshell as I think you could get without actually being one, and is extremely well made and offers fantastic protection.

So, it depends on the bass and it depends on the quality of the gig-bag.
