I rarely bother with hardcases anymore. Especially since I can backpack two basses and free my hands to lug in my amp or cab. I hate making extra trips when long walks to the car are involved.

The two basses that I use for gigs already have their share of dents, cracks and scratches, and that includes a used Pedulla that I paid four figures for. They're tools and I like to travel light. I use a Fender Deluxe double gig bag.

Real gig bags have two inches of foam everywhere.
And as described , it's a gig bag , not a shipping container or designed for touring lower Slobovia.
so dont let strangers touch your bag! |

I'm in and out on average 3-4 days/week, so a hard case gets old very quickly - especially when I carry 2 basses, in which case I use a double bag. I'd rather put my basses in bags and put them in my truck than have them ride in the (uncovered) bed of the truck in hard cases.
I do have a closet full of hard cases, and some of those have basses in them, but for my daily in/out, a good quality bag is far more convenient. Maybe if you hardly leave the house, then a hard case is fine, but if you're in and out regularly, a good bag is the way to go.
Edit: Now I will use hard cases if I'm traveling far and the basses won't be in the cab with me anyway.

| | Yeah, I've got the moves like Jagger. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: G.R. MI | | | My bass is in a gig bag right now! I like the convenience of the bag for short local stuff. If I'm driving a great distance, or stashing my bass where other bands are stashing their stuff, I like the hard case.

My question is, if I bought a gig bag and painted a lurid scene on the outside, would it then be appropriate to refer to it as a bawdy bag?

I also own a Skjold PSD that came in a Skjold gig-bag. The bag is as close to a hardshell as I think you could get without actually being one, and is extremely well made and offers fantastic protection.
So, it depends on the bass and it depends on the quality of the gig-bag.
