Gig Issues

We had scheduled a gig at a local club, The End Zone in Gaithersburg, where we would actually share the stage with another local band. This is not something we usually do at clubs, but we all know each other and all but one of us in Whatever have filled in for this other band (The V6 band). When discussing details with the owner several weeks back, we agreed on a flat fee of $300-$400 for each band. Unfortunately, we did this by verbal agreement and did not get it in writing (both bands have played there in the past). On Tuesday, he contacts the leader of the V6 Band and says that the bands need to play for the door and that we should make more money this way anyway. We (Whatever) flat out rejected this change while the V6 band considered it for a little bit, but also had to reject his offer as well. We find out later that not only did he plan to let certain people in without paying the cover, he also continues to have an air conditioner problem. It seems obvious at this point that neither band would have made squat and he was really shifting all the risk to us. Since I had already produced posters, placed the gig on the internet etc. as well as agree to play for both bands, I feel abused. Both bands have had to scramble to tell people that the gig has been canceled. We've gotten by with verbal agreements from this same club (and owner) in the past, and he was a pleasure to deal with. It just shows you that a written contract is preferable.

As much as a club owner might seem great to work with at first, the majority of them will try things such as this. Not only did he lose your two bands and business for this performance but also future business since you now no longer trust his word or tactics. His type of put you on the spot last minute try to force you to take the offer deal backfired on him and I applaud both bands for standing your ground. Don't ever play for the door. There are so many reasons not to do them. You mentioned a few but there are many more.

The negative side is you now do not have time to rebook the date and that is probably why he waited to drop this on you. Also, people who expect you to be there and show up to find out otherwise makes it bad for your bands for your fans. I have had club owners pull a fast one on us and when people came to see us, they lied and said we cancelled on them.

Good call.

I GUARANTEE YOU, if that club owner thought for one second there was more money at the door, HE would be at the door.
