Gillan or Coverdale

Sign in to disble this ad
Im having a few beers so im also having an rock evening.
who do you reckon was the better singer for purple (Gillan or Coverdale)
I personally think Mr Coverdale had a miles better voice but then again Mr Gillan did all the classic purple tracks so is it "Coverdale or Gillan"
Should be interesting.

I have had this debate with friends for years.
As you stated Gillan sang on all their classics.
Coverdale was great also, much bluesier, and really fitted the material & direction the band was going on "Burn" which is still one of my favorite all-time albums
But I must cast my vote for Ian Gillan.
Coverdale could never pull off songs such as "Child in Time" or "Highway Star".
Coverdale was great in concert (see California Jam DVD) but struggled singing any of the Gillan songs they attempted.
Remember, Blackmore wanted Paul Rodgers to replace Gillan, who rejected the offer to form Bad Co., but settled on Coverdale

Gillan for Purple, Coverdale for EVERYTHING else...even though "Stormbringer" is probably my favorite DP tune....and Whitesnake's "Slide It In" album is one of my all-time faves.

Much respect to Coverdale but Ian Gillan is the voice of Deep Purple....

I've never understood what's so great about David Coverdale. Ian Gillan all the way.

P.S.: And Glenn Hughes is way better singer than Coverdale IMO.

Gillan in Purple vs Coverdale in Purple: Gillan all the way.

Although, as others have stated, DP Mk III had their moments, also...Burn Stormbringer and several others could more than hold their own with the Mk II classics.

Coverdale must have taken some vocal lessons or some type of vocal coaching after DP broke up, because he was a much better, more controlled vocalist when I first saw him in Whitesnake...Ready & Willing tour. And he got better from there...

Gillan. No question.

Gillan buy a "million miles". Just happened to be "You Tubing" all the D.P. cool moments. What fun!

I want to respect Coverdale, really I do BUT the crap he put out after Sykes left (basically anything after "Slide It In" ) is weak and mixed for *^&!^&% (e.g. Is This Love? what crapola with a weak 80s' mix..Such a contrast to "Slide It In" it's embarrassing really.
