Giving lessons?

Sign in to disble this ad
I searched the forums and couldn't come up with anything, but maybe I didn't search it right.
I'm on the verge of being able to live off music, but not ready to live at that level of, well, poverty, so I am considering supplementing my music income by giving lessons.
Are there threads out there that I missed on giving lessons?
You teachers, does it work well for you? Are the majority of your students beginners or are some well advanced? What do they most want to learn? Can you make $100 a day at it? What did it take you to build you business? Thanks!

hundred dollars a day? Definitely. I've seen people giving lessons for a dollar a ,omiyrlately, and doing hour and fifteen minute lessons! I don't know much about how to go about doing them, but I can tell you for sure its a good way to make money if you do it right.

At that rate, if a person never slept, the most he would make in a day is $24.

Works easiest if you develop a program and find folks who want to enroll.

This gets you out of the trap of trying to persuade folks to stay forever... news travels fast if you can inspire succes.. most folks inspire repeat lessons vs success.

Just like music - comes down to selling.

My guitarist gives lessons at a music store. They take a small cut, but it does make you appear to be more professional that way. Find a local (to you) music store, see if you can work a deal. Do bussiness cards, leave them on the counter. Great (free) advertising.

I used to teach for two years in a music store setting. They paid the store, store took a small cut and I got paid. The money is fairly decent comparatively; I think on a per-hour basis, I made three times what I make now at my day gig.

However, here's the reason I got out of it. Most of the kids that were in my classes (because at a music store, you don't have a lot of say over who you will and will not accept) didn't want to learn anything but play tab, fool around or didn't even want to be there, while their parents thought they were encouraging their kids. It takes a great amount of patience to deal with that kind of stuff, and I can honestly say I don't have it.

Not to discourage you at all, just more of a "Here's what happened when I did it" type thing.
