This question stems from another post here on TB.
Under what circumstances is is OK for someone to ask the band to let them play a song at their gig (as opposed to the band inviting you to sit in for a few songs)? |

That is unless I was specificially invited to beforehand.
How would you feel if another bassist came to your gig and asked to play during your set? |

| | | | I know it is my question, but I vote no/never/shouldn't ever happen too.
I would think it was strange for someone to ask me to play a song at one of my gigs. Thankfully, it hasn't happened yet.

1. That guy is almost always obnoxious as hell
2. You feel instantly repelled by his presence and peeved that you now are put in a position to say, "No, really. I would rather you not" - You should not have to say such things to people.
3. You would be so much happier if he never asked in the first place.
Now, imagine YOU are that guy...

But I require they ask me personally, not the other band members. I want to be able to "interview" the guy who wants to play my rig and the groove. But, never ask during the middle of a set.
Sometimes a guy is away from home for a long time without a bass and friends to jam with. If I can help get a little happiness for a couple of songs, then cool.
Fortunately for the very few times I did this, there were no trainwrecks and the other bandmembers missed having me play the bass. Win for both of us. |

It's like being the kid in grade school who was always trying to bum snacks and gum off other kids, when he could've brought his own, but never did.

| | | | Ok, thanks guys
what about asking to try someone's bass in between sets?
I am guessing the answer is still "never".
What do you do if someone asks to try your bass between sets (as opposed to after the gig)?
disclaimer: I already have an opinion on this, I just want to see if it matches the consensus.
