The problem for me is that you're throwing out the baby with the bath water. It seems that the very thing you like about urban/black gospel is the soulful exuberance that comes from the fact that it's inspired by, well, the Gospels! The closest you'll get to it is certain soul/R&B/funk music, but even that has its roots in black gospel. Good luck.

Don't get me wrong, I've got no problem with gospel existing as a style of music or that a lot of music has been derived from it, I just don't wanna feel like I'm being preached to when I'm just tryin to jam, haha.

Gotcha . I'm just sayin' you may not be able to get one without the other, or at least it may not be quite the same.

I think it's probably a safe assumption that there are lots of passionate musicians in the world, not just the ones playing religious tunes.

Nah, what he's getting at is that the vocals and lyrics in gospel music are a HUGE part of what create the energy in the music and that it may be difficult to find the music with that kind of power behind it without the religious context. I can understand that. It's not about all music, just this style.

You don't think Doug Pinnick has a gospel aspect?

I'd love to hear that sound but with different lyrics or none at all. It's a longshot I know, but I had to ask.

You may want to be not standing outside near any metal objects when you play it.

Some may say that it's an accurate depiction of the God of the Old Testament...

Seriously? Dug and the boys have some lyrical content that was once misconstrued as a gospel band but they are a rock band and not at all what the OP is looking for.

Switchfoot are another christian rock band... so I don't think that is what the OP is looking for in the slightest. He wants gospel music without the jesus or kindergarten level lyrical content.

OP have you tried listen to some smooth jazz/r&b stations, the poppier the better, you will find artists doing what you are looking for. They won't all be playing gospel stylized music but you will find some. I apologize I cannot name names but as much as I enjoy this style of music I don't buy albums in the genre.

A VERY uncool and unneccessary cheap shot. Was Kwesi's question really that hard to understand? It certainly wasn't an invitation to bash religion. Back on topic, please...
