I'm thinking about gettin' a acoustic guitar for myself just for kicks, but I still want something that's an alright instrument. Only problem is that I know jack **** about acoustic guitars (electrics are fine since one can treat 'em as miniature basses ). So I wonder if this is a good guitar; considering that I don't need an investment, just something that's good enough so I don't want to set it on fire after 5 mins of playing.
Here's what I'm currently looking at: http://www.thomann.de/fi/fender_cd_100_ce_na.htm

You can find surprisingly high quallity unstruments for cheap if you're willing to go import. (Think in terms of Skylines and Kingstons here)
The most important things to look for in terms of am acoustic guitar that won't sound constipated and turn him off of instrumental music is solid wood tops, workable trussrod, and decent fretwork. The only one of those you can tell from an ad is the top, and this guitar failed on that one.
I'd recommend looking up the recording King Classic line. Their Series I and Series II guitars are all solid wood and ought to go for about the same street price as the Fender you were looking at.
Most other instruments with similar construction go for more. What is the budget range you were looking at?

I tried a 169 € Squier at a shop that had a solid spruce top, and it sounded real nice, but it had no onboard preamp, which is something I would like since I wouldn't like to shell out 150 € more for a decent pickup. http://www.thomann.de/fi/fender_cd140sce_na.htm
This one seems a bit better, and since Thomann has the cheapest stuff in Europe I'm kinda locked with them. The fact that all three cheapo instruments I've bought from them have been great only adds to that.

I looked at 'em Recording King's, and they look real good, as long as I can find a reseller in Europe (so I don't have to pay any taxes).

Unfortunately I could buy a good used car for what it would have cost me.
