I'm thinking about gettin' a acoustic guitar for myself just for kicks, but I still want something that's an alright instrument. Only problem is that I know jack **** about acoustic guitars (electrics are fine since one can treat 'em as miniature basses ). So I wonder if this is a good guitar; considering that I don't need an investment, just something that's good enough so I don't want to set it on fire after 5 mins of playing.

Here's what I'm currently looking at:

My friend had a cheaper Fender a few years ago and it played fine, the thing you'll notice the most IMO with the cheaper one's is the fret work is kinda sloppy.

Avoid that one. Even for beginners and on a low budget nowadays there is no need to settle for a plywood top.

You can find surprisingly high quallity unstruments for cheap if you're willing to go import. (Think in terms of Skylines and Kingstons here)

The most important things to look for in terms of am acoustic guitar that won't sound constipated and turn him off of instrumental music is solid wood tops, workable trussrod, and decent fretwork. The only one of those you can tell from an ad is the top, and this guitar failed on that one.

I'd recommend looking up the recording King Classic line. Their Series I and Series II guitars are all solid wood and ought to go for about the same street price as the Fender you were looking at.

Most other instruments with similar construction go for more. What is the budget range you were looking at?

100 € - 250 €. I tried a 169 € Squier at a shop that had a solid spruce top, and it sounded real nice, but it had no onboard preamp, which is something I would like since I wouldn't like to shell out 150 € more for a decent pickup.

This one seems a bit better, and since Thomann has the cheapest stuff in Europe I'm kinda locked with them. The fact that all three cheapo instruments I've bought from them have been great only adds to that.

That looks like a better choice.

Funny how they're the same price though...

I looked at 'em Recording King's, and they look real good, as long as I can find a reseller in Europe (so I don't have to pay any taxes).

I'm really considering their RO-16 as a camp guitar, so I don't have to risk my Taylor.

Hey, I just checked Thomann, and they stock Recording Kings, but only 'em stupid art models. I'll have to pop 'em an email and ask if they could get 'em other ones as well.

Definitely play any Alvarezes before you buy them. The good ones are awesome. The bad ones suck worse than a ten dollar vacuum clearner.

Aw man. I got to play a Lowden much like that one on the left. I don't know the model, though. That thing was SWEET.

Unfortunately I could buy a good used car for what it would have cost me.

Don't buy one online, with any kind of acoustic instrument you should try it out before you buy it.

I paid 300 bucks for an Alvarez with a hard case and a solid spruce top. A great player and sounds awesome.

Seagull or Simon & Patrick. Best bang for the buck.

I have an SX DG30 (discontinued now) and absolutely love it. Solid spruce top, rosewood body and fretboard, pick-up on board, for only $150
