Good artists / singers using pitch correction

Sign in to disble this ad
Pitch correction using autotune or similar software is often associated to market-oriented pop acts, who (according to detractors) could not sing notes properly.

However, do you think there are many other pitch-correction users from different styles / backgrounds artists? Say, a band you respect artistically, high-profile indie bands, or even classic, iconographic rock stars?

In other words, could I use pitch correction without feeling like a fraud?

I'd venture to say that most of what you hear these days has some subtle (or not-so-subtle) pitch correction. If you have unlimited time, sing it til you get it right. If not, I wouldn't worry about a little autotune. Just don't make it obvious. Please.

I believe Bobby Kimball used pitch correction on this show:

Nevertheless, he is a superb singer. It's a bit disappointing, though.

In Pop songs, it's used as an effect (it's so annoying.) They can be useful though. On the day we did our demo, our singer was sick as a dog. We had this one shot where everyone and the engineer were together at one time. Rescheduling would have been really tough, so we plowed ahead. There were a couple of places he simply couuld not reach the note. The engineer used it to correct those places. Just a "nudge" with a computer mouse. When we A/B'd those tracks, we were impressed. It didn't sound artificial.

One of the best uses of autotune I've heard is something Timaya has done a few times - he'll do a lead vocal without autotune, then a few layers of harmony vocals with very blatantly robotic autotune. That's a really good idea - it doesn't flatten all the natural expression in the lead vocal, but makes the harmonies "cleaner" by autotuning and compressing them. That lets him do pretty crazy stuff in the harmony vocals that would sound like a mess otherwise.

This song doesn't use as much autotune as some of his other ones, but there's definitely some on the background vocals, so it's a good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtw7cMv5urw

Also this KC Presh track has blatant autotune on just about everything, some crazy layering in the vocals, and I think it's great, though they're not as popular as Timaya: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VfTOY3GS6M

To correct your pitch? Cheating.

As an effect? Have at it.
