part of the serial number is scratched off. Should I stay away?

It's a Fender, btw...don't think it is marked as a second.

Well that's true. The seller bought the bass at a flea market a couple of years ago, and told me that he contacted the police, who basically treated it as an unclaimed item. Maybe I won't bother...

Why not? I don't see much risk, unless you plan to flip it. If it suits you and it's a good price, go for it.
