Just curious--why exactly do you want to buy a bass over here? I maybe could see why if you're planning on buying a specific American-made bass that you could get a good price on over here. But if you just want a good bass, there are some UK makers who can do as good a job as most anybody here. Like Sei and Shuker (I have two Shukers myself).

In any case, here are some shops.

Note, however, that although Joey G has a lot of cool basses, most are European--meaning you could probably get as least as good a deal from the UK.

take a train to jersey and go to jersey guitar and bass. 732-225-4444. way more there than you'll find anywhere in the city. foderas, pedullas, rare warwicks, interesting cheapos, basses i never even heard of, and nice friendly people.

nyc ain't what it used to be. i still kinda like rudy's though.

with the exchange rate, it's very favorable at the moment to buy here. I ordered a guitar here for a friend back in the UK, even with international shipping and customs duties it was still $200 cheaper than buying it new in the UK.

TheBaron, do you know what sort of bass you want to buy? There are lots of cheap online US retailers, and maybe a friendly NY TB'er would let you order and have it delivered to them so you could pick it up from them while over.

Definitely second the bassboutique.com recommendation. Rudy's has a good selection, although it's hella expensive and the service is ... variable. If you're looking for something mainstream then there's also samash.com and guitarcenter.com, they both have Manhattan stores.
Some other stores: http://www.30thstreetguitars.com and http://www.mannys.com

Ain't that the truth.

Rudy's can be fun....that is if you have a wallet like Paul McCartney.

OK, I see where you're coming from. In that case, you could also consider the new-ish Guitar Center down on 14th Street.
