A good Gig Bag...

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Lakland 5501D that is in need of a new Gig bag. Other than the Levy's Lakland branded bag, does anyone recommend a gig bag that is well padded and will fit the 5501 snugly?

Thanks.

I have a couple of Ritters- single & double. The single holds my Fender Jazz 5 snugly, & is very well made. I've also put my Warwick FNA & Stambaugh 6s in it; the 4 can move around a bit but the 6s have nowhere to go. Hope this helps.

How much are you looking to spend? I love my Incase Slim Bag, and would recommend it to anyone, though it will put you back $200. If you are looking for a good quality gig bag for a very little bit of cash, check out the carvin gig bag. It is a great bag for only $35, and it looks like this shipping is now free. I use the carvin bag for my carvin lb75f, and couldn't be happier for the cost.

I tried an Incase bag and it's really (personal opinion) more a soft case and I didn't like it. I thought it was kind of cumbersome. My next gig bag purchase is going to be an Undercover. Bass Central has 'em.

The Roadrunner gig bags at GC look pretty good... Thick padding and lots of compartments, thick straps... There's even a model with a detachable backpack in the front - I believe those are $60.

Musician's Friend has an MF brand similar to this, it's only $30.

There's also a new company called Gig Skinz - or something like that... Saw it in BP mag.

But I don't know how snugly those will the your Lakland though.

I own a Gig Skinz. I just ordered an Undercover to replace it. Here's why: the top of the straps are sewn on too low on the bag, which makes the bag tilt back and to the side when carrying it with one shoulder (how I prefer). And if you wear it backpack style, you're going to bang the headstock on doorframes. Not a big deal since the bag is really well padded, it'll just throw you off balance. But for me, no gig bag should do that. So out with the Gig Skinz for me.

Oh yeah, another thing is that the gig skinz bag zippers are a little flimsy. Mine gets caught pretty frequently.

I recently purchased a Warwick Rockbag for my DJ5. It protects the bass well but there is one thing about it I don't care for..When using the shoulder straps, the bass rides up too high and the I really have to duck going up the stairs so the headstock doesn't hit the basement ceiling. The Deluxe Fender and the Levy's bags ride a little lower which is important (to me at least) when you got your hands full carrying gear.

Ritters rule, they have that little strap inside to velcro the neck against the side of the bag.
nice small, compact,hi tech looking and keeps the rain out.

although i've yet to try the sadowsky portabag, looks cool.

I had one of the deluxe Warwick gig bags when I had my Corvette. Nice furry inside and lots of padding, plus it's got the velcro strap thing to wrap around the neck inside to hold it in place.

I have one - it's rock solid; made it through several tours and gigs and it's still looking like new. It also protects the instrument very well: one time the whole stage props that were in the gear trailer collapsed over my bass; I thought it was a goner, but nope, amazingly (somehow) that gig bag protected it - not a single scratch.

Yes I would agree. The Incase slim bag is more of a "soft case" than a "gig bag". It has protection like a case, but carries like a gig bag. Also, its shape makes it a little more portable than rectangle cases, soft or not.

I use a Mooradian Double electric bass bag. Very high quality-i think i paid $150-200ish from Sadowsky. My reasoning behind getting a bag from Mooradian is that i have one of their upright bass bags and it has held up amazingly well.

Worth the money, has nice back pack straps, a large pocket for cables, music, etc, and then a smaller pocket near the head stock for tuners, pencils, and other small stuff.

The only bags that i would consider besides these are a nice leather bag. However, i haven't researched those at all.
