I have a Lakland 5501D that is in need of a new Gig bag. Other than the Levy's Lakland branded bag, does anyone recommend a gig bag that is well padded and will fit the 5501 snugly?
Thanks.

I've also put my Warwick FNA & Stambaugh 6s in it; the 4 can move around a bit but the 6s have nowhere to go. Hope this helps.

If you are looking for a good quality gig bag for a very little bit of cash, check out the carvin gig bag. It is a great bag for only $35, and it looks like this shipping is now free. I use the carvin bag for my carvin lb75f, and couldn't be happier for the cost.

Musician's Friend has an MF brand similar to this, it's only $30.
There's also a new company called Gig Skinz - or something like that... Saw it in BP mag.
But I don't know how snugly those will the your Lakland though. |

But I don't know how snugly those will the your Lakland though. | I own a Gig Skinz. I just ordered an Undercover to replace it. Here's why: the top of the straps are sewn on too low on the bag, which makes the bag tilt back and to the side when carrying it with one shoulder (how I prefer). And if you wear it backpack style, you're going to bang the headstock on doorframes. Not a big deal since the bag is really well padded, it'll just throw you off balance. But for me, no gig bag should do that. So out with the Gig Skinz for me.
Oh yeah, another thing is that the gig skinz bag zippers are a little flimsy. Mine gets caught pretty frequently. |

It protects the bass well but there is one thing about it I don't care for..When using the shoulder straps, the bass rides up too high and the I really have to duck going up the stairs so the headstock doesn't hit the basement ceiling. The Deluxe Fender and the Levy's bags ride a little lower which is important (to me at least) when you got your hands full carrying gear.

nice small, compact,hi tech looking and keeps the rain out.
although i've yet to try the sadowsky portabag, looks cool.

I have one - it's rock solid; made it through several tours and gigs and it's still looking like new. It also protects the instrument very well: one time the whole stage props that were in the gear trailer collapsed over my bass; I thought it was a goner, but nope, amazingly (somehow) that gig bag protected it - not a single scratch.

It has protection like a case, but carries like a gig bag. Also, its shape makes it a little more portable than rectangle cases, soft or not. |

My reasoning behind getting a bag from Mooradian is that i have one of their upright bass bags and it has held up amazingly well.
Worth the money, has nice back pack straps, a large pocket for cables, music, etc, and then a smaller pocket near the head stock for tuners, pencils, and other small stuff.
The only bags that i would consider besides these are a nice leather bag. However, i haven't researched those at all.
